In 1875, John Coatesville became part of the United States and during this time, scopes became very popular among Americans. People used them for hunting and fishing and also used them to see stars at night. In 1895, JohnCoatesville merged with neighboring townships to form what is now called Beaver County. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Delaware River. In 1802, they donated land to be used for a school and church. The first post office was established in 1807. In 1839, John Mifflin began to cultivate potatoes in what is now Coatesville. He became known as "the Father of Potato Farming." The potato industry made Coatesville one of the most prosperous towns in Butler County until it declined during World War II when production stopped because of Nazi occupation and bombing raids. After the war, many people returned to Coatesville and started new businesses such as manufacturing goods such as textiles and shoes; coaling plants; oil refineries; meatpacking plants; and other service industries. Many residents also retired origrated to other parts of Pennsylvania after the war ended. Coatesville was a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. It was located on the Monongahela River, about west of Pittsburgh and east of Erie. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Coatesville was John Coates, who arrived in 1784. He erected a log cabin on the river bank where he now lives. In 1814, Isaac Swayne built a grist mill on the riverbank. The mill continued to be in operation until 1872. In 1829, Presbyterian preacher Rev. James Hinton organized a church here and started teaching school for children from rural districts near Pittsburgh. In 1835, he built a house here which served as his home until his death in 1860. His wife stayed here until her death in 1865; they were married December 12th, 1808 (age 73 years). They had six children: James (1829-1912), Sarah E., Lucy A., Addie C.,Harriet B.,and John W.. Reverend Hinton is buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery near Pittsburgh. The post office called "Coatesville" began operation on October 15th, 1800, under the name of "Pittsburgh". It changed its name to "Butler" on March 3rd of that year after Butler County became part of Pennsylvania Territory under President George Washington's order following the Louisiana Purchase complications created by that purchase and subsequent negotiations between France and Spain over their respective claims to Texas - these issues led to what is now known as American Civil War era America On November 1st 1861 Colonel Elijah Palfrey set up headquarters at Coatesville with orders from General Ulysses S Grant to march northward through western Pennsylvania with plans eventually to cross the Susquehanna River into Maryland before moving southward through Delaware Bay towards Philadelphia Incorrect information has circulated for some time suggesting that Colter Palfrey actually reached Chambersburg prior to this date- events leading up thereto should have made him aware of Grant's movements
The Coatesville area was first settled in the 17th century. The town was named for General Nathaniel Coates, who played a significant role in the American Revolution. In 1827, the town became a borough and was renamed Coatesville after James A. Coates, one of its founders. The borough has since been annexed by the city of Reading.
