In 1878, Coatesville was founded by its first settler, Dr. John C. Coates. The town Blanchardstown was named for him and his wife, Sarah Ann (Blanchard). The family operated a small grocery business until about 1910 when Dr. Coates passed away and the business became co-owned by his son John Jr. and daughter Fannie (Finch). In 1918, the younger Coates sold the store to their cousin Arthur A. Finch and continued to run it as an independently owned grocery until he died in 1951. After Arthur's death, the store passed out of hands until it reopened in 1984 as a retail center known today as Finch's Supermarket. From this humble beginnings, General Store evolved into one of the most successful stores in Beaver County selling firearms both new and used along with ammunition, gunspowder and other sporting supplies from coast to coast during prohibition days (1890-1922). It is interesting to note that while many other businesses closed down during prohibition due to strict government regulations concerning handguns sales – General Store survived doingbusiness as usual thanks to its knowledgeable staff who could explain all things handgun related to customers of all ages including youngsters just starting out learning how to shoot safely! Drury & Sons Pistol Shop located on Second Avenue also experienced success during prohibition years with specialties such as repairs/replacements on old pistols as well as new production models including revolvers and autos; however due to lack of demand or competition from much larger retailers – Drury Catskill closed its doors in 1922 after 38 years of operation making way for what is today known as Kelley's Gun Emporium which still stands today on Fourth Avenue across from Valley View Elementary School…sharing a single building with four different departments: Firearms Sales/Repairs/Sale - Owned & operated by Mr./Mrs./Mr./Ms.(George) Kelley since 1907; Ammunition Sales/ Repairs/Sale - Owned & operated by Mr./ Mrs./Ms.( Jane) Kline since 1914; Department Of Household And Floor Care - Operated by Mrs.(Edith) Weiser since 1921; finally Department Of Tools And Equipment - Which housed our original forge where we built all our handguns back in 1907!

The first settler in Coatesville was John Coates who arrived in 1795. He and his wife, Rebecca, founded the township of Coatesville on the Beaver Creek near present-day Ross Township. The two men were Colonel Elijah White's Assistant Asst Commissary of Indian Affairs and many of their descendants still live there today. In 1827, Edward Beal bought land east of Coatesville from Captain Robert McDowell for $1,000. Beal renamed it Bealstown after himself and his family. Beal also built a sawmill around this time which still stands today on the creek opposite State Road 717 (now US 20). John Hays erected a log cabin in 1839 at what is now the corner of Fourth Street and Second Avenue in what is now part of downtown Coatesville. He became one of the first farmers in that area and started raising corn, wheat and other crops as early as 1840. By 1861 he had four homes with fifty acres ( twenty-six hectares) of farmland within his limits; he also ran a mill that year employing sixty workers plus servants to help with the harvest season
