In 1855, Coatesville was founded by George Washington Carver. The community was named after General Robert E. Lee, who fought in the American Revolution and died at the Battle of Gettysburg. Carver's son, Andrew Carver, founded the first local grocery store in Coatesville in 1892. In 1916, co-founder of Coca Cola Dr. John Pemberton opened the first soda fountain in Coatesville. In 1938, a three-story building on Market Street became home to the Coatesville Police Department and Services Administration Building until it burned down in 1988. The town saw its most significant development during World War II when over 5,000 men from both America and Great Britain served as part of theCoatesville Defense League (CDC). After the war ended, many veterans returned to Coatesville and started businesses such as grocery stores and printing presses. However, by 1930 it had only 6500 residents remaining and gradually declined thereafter; its last Census count occurred in 2000. Today, few people live within miles of Coatesville due to its location on an agricultural area that has been heavily used for crops since the 18th century. Agricultural production has continued to be an important facet of local economy until recent times; however, there are now several commercial businesses located within a short distance of Coatesville proper.
