Coatesville is a borough in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,614 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The community was named for Coatesville, Maryland, where George Washington and his family had their home from 1789 to 1800. It first became a town on October 25, 1825 when it was organized as a result of a referendum held by the Borough Council. The name change came about because of the near-simultaneous arrival in town of General John Forbes and Drury Lane Tavern owner Josiah Niles who were both famous speakers at that time. In 1828, Coatesville built its first schoolhouse and found two other citizens to help finance its construction. By 1830, the population had grown to 12 residents and by 1836 it had reached 20 residents with seven schools open. In 1840, after some discussion among council members over whether or not to annex neighboring Monongahela Township (to the south), Coatesville voted 3-0 in favor of annexation and became part of Westmoreland County under Pennsylvania law then known as "the Union Act". An additional referendum approved annexing Monongahela Township on November 10th 1840 resulted in 4-1 approval by the Borough Council for what would become one of the most dramatic changes to westward moving Pennsylvanian municipalities during those years: all but three precincts within the new township agreed to incorporation into Coatesville just minutes before polling day! In March 1846 an epidemic broke out in town which forced Mayor Israel Goodrich indoors until evening; he reported that he could see no way possible for his people “to get through such an affliction” without succor from above – so much so that he offered food and drink free to anyone who wished it until morning if needed. Reportedly around 100 individuals gathered outside Goodrich’s house seeking relief before finally leaving for good at sunrise – an event which helped start what would soon be called “The Great pandemic” in Coatesville! On July 9th 1863 Confederate General Robert Ewell's army invaded Pennsylvanian soil while encamped at Bethlehem Junction; four days later they attacked and destroyed several stores/buildings along Main Street between Wilson Avenue and Market Street - thus beginning what would come to be known as "The Battle of Gettysburg". A few weeks later Majestic Theatre located on Grant Street caught fire resulting in $5,000 damage but fortunately no injuries occurred; however this also resulted in large expenditures on firefighters due throughout western PA during this period with much more intense firefighting efforts than ever seen before or since... Consequently many structures still stand today including both houses opposite McCracken's Pub & Grill located on Grant Street across from Irontown High School... Notable losses included: 1) The Maternity Hospital (now Institute HealthPlex) - valued at $10K 2) Store #2 (now frame building next door to Masonic Lodge @ 14th & Market Streets) - valued at $6K 3) Store #3 (now frame building next door to First Presbyterian Church @ 15th & Market Streets) - valued at $4K 4) Mrs. Hagerty's House (now structure adjacent Toomer's Garage @ 16th & Grant Streets)... One notable non-fire victim was Drury Lane Tavern Owner Josiah Niles who sustained minor cuts when window panes shattered following skirmish between soldiers AND local tavern employees

Coatesville is a small town located in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. The community was founded by John Coates in 1798. It became a borough in 1868 and was incorporated as a township in 1903. The name of the streets and other public facilities were changed from "John Coates" to "Adam Wright" after Adam Wright, one of the founders of Reading University and an early settler in what is now Coatesville. In 1924, the borough became part of the newly created Venango Township, but it reverted to its original name in 1951 when PennDOT abandoned that part of Venango Township for Mechanicsburg-Berkshire County. In 1984, Coatesville Elementary School closed due to budget cuts and reopened as Borough High School; however, it shut down again due to budgetary shortfalls in 2007. It reopened once more as Borough Community College on February 20th 2013 following a vote by the Board of Commissioners reopening high school which had been closed since 1984 because of budget problems caused by then-Mayor Edward Rendell's administration. According to the United States Census Bureau, Coatesville has a total area of , all land.
In 1809, a group of settlers from Georgia moved to Coatesville and established the town. The first post office was opened in 1810. In 1815, the town was renamed for Frederick Douglass, an American slave who had helped lead a slave revolt in Virginia.
