The first known mention of Coatesville is from 1682 when it was called "Cranston". The name's origin may be as derived from John Coates who owned land there in that year. In 1755, Ebenezer Weiser erected a tavern on what is now Cemetery Drive in what was then the hamlet of Cranston. By 1800, the population had increased to 150 and by 1810 to 350. There were also three gristmills and one sawmill operation in Coatesville during this time period. In 1834, George Washington visited the village while en route to visit General James Ketchum at Fort Pitt. After his visit, local residents built a house for him on Cemetery Drive which still stands today. In 1850, Drury Lane Baptist Church was chartered with Mr. Jno Biddle as its first pastor and Revs Alectus Wigglesworth and Elijah Ford as its members - both Methodists - providing religious services at their church until 1895 when they moved to First Presbyterian Church where they remain to this day (2015). A post office was established at Coatesville in 1855, but it only lasted six months due to high volume rates caused by Indian hostilities against American settlers raiding Native villages across North America during that time period; nevertheless, it remains one of York County's longest-standing institutions with ZIP code 15347 being its primary address since 1958 according to the US Postal Service website

The community was named after General Nathaniel Johnson Coates, an American Revolutionary War general and signer of the Declaration of Independence. The first store in Coatesville opened its doors on October 15, 1812, by special order of Governor John Adams. At that time it was one of the few places in western Pennsylvania where goods could be bought and sold without being subject to state tariffs or excise taxes. In 1814 Colonel Richard Rush established a military post just west of town called Rush's Ford; this became an important hub for trade with surrounding counties and regions during the Whiskey Rebellion (1815-1817). Colonel Rush also contributed to early development of the town square which still stands today adjacent to First Presbyterian Church on Market Street. The Square later became home to local schools and businesses before becoming abandoned following World War II when most residents moved away for various reasons including wartime production opportunities throughout eastern Pennsylvania or because they were displaced by newly developed communities such as Bethlehem Steel or Pittsburgh’s immense suburbs. Today only fragments remain from Early 1800s homesites including a 2-story log house located east of Center Avenue which once housed the Post Office and a 1-story frame structure now used as a Citizens Bank building across from First Presbyterian Church that served as Social Services Building until 1978 When it burned down due to arson;[1] much like many other pioneer buildings throughout central PA that have been lost over time to neglect or demolition challenges[2]. In 1862 Captain John Pemberton founded Coatesville Military Academy,[3] which would become one of America’s leading military academies followed shortly thereafter by West Point Academy; both schools would eventually merge into Ivy League University in New York City in 1911.[4][5] While militarily significant during both periods,[6][7],Coatesville also experienced rapid growth due largely to its location within easy commuting distance for Reading, Lancaster, Harrisburg and all points east while remaining relatively unencumbered by larger metropolitan centers concurrent with technological advances such as railroad construction that had dramatic effects on everyday life inside urban areas across North America[8][9].
