Firearms were not allowed in the town until 1792 when a law was passed that banned all firearms except for shotguns and pistols. In 1802, Lieutenant Colonel James Hargrave organized a militia unit to protect the town from Native Americans. The village had no defenses and faced an attack by about 200 warriors with spears, tomahawks, and shields. Lt Col Hargrave ordered his men to fire into the crowd which killed many Indians and drove them back onto the Indian Reserve. In 1829, John Burtz purchased land at what is today called Old Coatesville from George Witherspoon for $2 per acre. He built a sawmill on the property and began to process lumber for building projects in Coatesville and surrounding towns. By 1871, Burtz had constructed three churches, four schools, two stores, twelve houses, one post office, two barns/campsites (one on each side of Mill Creek), five agricultural buildings (six corn cribs/maize fields; four horse orchards), six blacksmith shops (four forge buildings; one tool shop), ten acres of parkland northwest of Uptown Coatesville (now part of Midtown Township), seven miles long by six miles wide.,and thirty-six feet deep at its deepest point.]

After years of being used as a retail outlet for local residents and businesses alike, the store closed its doors for good in 2006 following bankruptcy proceedings filed against it by its owners.
