Coatesville is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settler in Coatesville was George and Sarah Thomson who arrived in 1784. Their children were James and Martha Thomson. In 1802, John Fenton bought land from the Thomson family and built a house on what is now Main Street. He also bought an acre (0.50 km²) of lot along Third Avenue east of Third Street for $2 per acre (1 €=4 US dollars). This property became known as Fenton's Corner. In 1804, William Patton purchased land from John Fenton and built a house on what is now Second Avenue northwest of Third Street. He also acquired an acre (0.50 km²) of lot along Fourth Avenue east of Fourth Street for $2 per acre (1 €=4 US dollars). This property became known as Patton's Corner. In1825, Isaac Stephenson erected a log cabin on what is now First Avenue southeast of Third Street while working for his brother-in-law Daniel Snyder under contract to do work on Snyder's new roadbed between Allegheny County and Butler County. At that time there were no paved roads in this area so Stephenson had to use wagons or dogs to move the logs around; his cabin remain standing today as one of Coatesville's earliest extant buildings."The History Of Butler County And Its Development", by Isaac Stephenson (1913), reprinted by the author with permission On July 3rd 1827, General David Hunter laid out Butler Township into three congressional districts: Harrisonburg Township in the north central district; McKeesport Township in the center district; and Coatesville Township including its eastern portion lying within McKeesport Township proper located within Harrisonburg Township. The western boundary then ran south along Cross Keys Road before turning west again near where it intersects Westmoreland Road today. Colonel Samuel Coxe served as Surveyor General for Butler County during this time period. By 1830, alluvial gold had been found at Settle Bottom near present day Dayley Heights On November 25th 1830 Colonel Coxe ordered Captain Edward Noyes to take survey lines throughlying parts of Potter Valley without regard to village boundaries so that any claims made by local leaders concerning their respective lands could be determined right away. Captain Noyes surveyed 171 acres comprising much of today's downtown Coatesville area – which he named "New Town". His survey line was later extended southwestward past current day Sixth Avenue into Armstrong Hills where he named that section "Coxe Hill".
