In 1819 the trustees began building on what became known as Old Mill Road which served as a community center until 1889 when the first schoolhouse and stable were built on North Main Street across from present day First Baptist Church. The first post office was established in 1824 with James Hickey as its first officer. It moved to its present location on North Main Street in 1889 after being destroyed by fire two years earlier while housed inside the old School House. Residents voted to rename their township after Frederick Douglass on November 12, 1888 - one week before he graduated from University of Pennsylvania with an Aesthetics degree and returned home to slave States Illinois where he had started working as a teacher before becoming an abolitionist preacher and organizer of black Americans in white societies during the early 19th century

Many of these structures still stand today including the old schoolhouse which replaced an earlier school building that burned down in 1896. The township's post office operated from 1829 to 1865 under the name of Chambersburg East Post Office. In 1865 it changed its name to Coatesville after General William Tecumseh Sherman's visit to the area during his Battle of Monmouth Junction Campaigns
