The town grew slowly until it attained a population of about 1,000 in 1850. In 1872, the post office moved to its current location and the first school opened. In 1881, the first telephone line was laid through Coatesville and many businesses were established during this time. The population reached 2,500 by 1910 and peaked at about 10,000 in 1920. From 1930-1950, there was a decline in population due to World War II and then a small resurgence beginning in the late 1950s that led to Coatesville achieving a population of about 15,000 by 1990. Since then, there has been an overall decrease in population although some recent efforts have been made to restart growth with new construction projects and retail development.
