In 1976 it merged with neighboring town Whitehall to form the present-day town of Coatesville and village of Whitehall. The Pottersville & Whitehall Railroad passed through Coatesville in 1879 and 1886; both tracks are still extant today as part of US 6 southbound between Scranton and Wilkes-Barre. According to the 2016 American Community Survey, 64% of residents were born within commuting distance to work – this compares favorably to most other communities in Lackawanna County where 75% or more residents commute inside their own municipality boundaries

Coatesville, Pennsylvania was a small town in the heart of the steel industry in the early 20th century. The town was named after Captain John Coates, who died fighting for American independence during the Revolutionary War. The town's first store and post office were built in 1819. In 1828, Colonel James Biddle founded the University of Pittsburgh in nearby Lawrenceburg, Maryland. The two towns amalgamated to form a single municipality on July 1, 1969. The town's economy was based primarily on heavy manufacturing and agriculture until World War II when it became an important industrial center with production of munitions, aircraft parts and other items essential to Allied victory in World War II. Afterward, Coatesville lost its economic significance as manufacturing moved away and population dwindled. However, the community has continued to be populated by descendants of those who founded it and its current name is reflective of that: "Johnstown" comes from Coatesville's original name - "Johannesburgh". The Johnstown steel plant operated from 1942-2002; it produced more than 200 million pounds (91 million kilograms) ofsteel each year. The plant closed due to increased competition from global rivals such as China and India andtowns across Pennsylvania relocated their production plants to Mexico City or other countries during this time period. However, remnants of Johnstown can still be found throughout central Pennsylvania including at Steel Valley National Monument which preserves part of the plant site where tools used at the plant are still exhibited today
The first European to set foot on what is now Coatesville was Captain John Smith in 1681. The area was part of the Susquehanna River valley and early settlers were farmers and hunters. In 1812, when the United States gained independence from Great Britain, Coatesville became a part of Pennsylvania. It was a small town at the time but it grew rapidly with the arrival of people from eastern Europe who wanted to start new lives in America. The town developed into a large city by the late 19th century.
