Coatesville is a small town in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,295 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The town was founded by Abram Coates in 1786 and named for him. The first store in Coatesville was built by Isaac Hockaday in 1810. In 1814, co-founder and mayor of Philadelphia Caleb Carr bought a piece of land east of the village and donated it to the town for development as a commercial center with markets, stores, schools, and churches. The village grew rapidly due to its location on a branch of the Susquehanna River adjacent to major transportation routes and its close proximity to other villages such as Slippery Rock (to the north), Westmoreland (to the west), Gettysburg (to the south), Johnstown (to the east), and Steelton (to the southeast). In 1825, Abram Coates died leaving his estate to his son Amos who also became mayor of Coatesville after serving two terms in that position from 1830-1834. After 9 years as mayor, Amos sold his interest in Coatesville to John Prentice who moved his family from Slippery Rock into what would become known as "The Village" within Coatesville proper. By 1865, when Union soldiers burned down all but one building in downtownslippery rockkilling almost all residents except about sixty or seventy men working on farms near Byberry Township then located just outside present day Scranton/Wilkes-Barre along Interstate 80 - most likely because many residents had sided with Confederate General Robert Ewell - only three buildings remained standing within what would eventually be called "The Village". remaining structures included several Baptist Churches which were converted into homes during Reconstruction; an old schoolhouse still used occasionally for classes; and an old post office which served as both a general store until 1888 and later again as a grocery store From this time forward untilpresent day there has been no formal resident government although some limited services have been provided through elected officials appointed by tribal governments or business organizations
