In 1896, First Baptist Church moved from its original location on Third Street northeast to what is now Second Avenue near Market Square; that year also saw the erection of Conshohocken School District headquarters which stands today as one of downtown's most recognizable landmarks. In 2001, Chester received city status and has since seen significant redevelopment including the construction of new municipal buildings as well as new retail development along Third Street NE which forms part of Chester's riverfront district
