Chester, Pennsylvania is a small town located in the eastern portion of Pennsylvania. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. Chester is a historic town and was named after Chester County, PA. The first settlement in what is now Chester Township was made on July 24, 1784 by Seth Warner and his family while they were traveling through the area on their way to Cumberland County. In 1821, the became part of York County and in 1828 it became a part of Lancaster County. On June 7, 1860, when Lancaster and York Counties merged to form Susquehanna County, Chester became a part of that state as well. It has since regained its independence from Pennsylvania and has had its own governing body ever since- the Chester Township Council consisting of twelve members elected at-large. Chester History goes back to 1784 when Seth Warner built a cabin on Beaver Creek near present day State Route 31A (the “Chester Road”). This first permanent settler in what is now known as Chester Township was Seth Warner who arrived with his family on July 24th 1784 from Cumberland County., PA . He erected an log cabin on Beaver Creek which he named “Hickory House” because he had found Hickory logs lying aroundnearby. Over time other settlers followed suit & by 1800 there were twenty five people living within the current boundaries of present day township including six families residing in Hickory House itself! Today most residents are descended from those original settlers with many still living in this small town today! The first school opened for students aged three to eight years old on October 1st 1824 by Mrs Ann Beasley under instruction provided by Reverend John Findlay! At that time only white children were allowed to attend school so all black children had to attend various homeschooling programs until 1865 when compulsory education began for all citizens! pupils attending school received two meals per day along with pay for services rendered! This early schooling system was not without controversy as many parents felt that their children should be able to read & write like adults butcherytool& some believed that proper education would open doors for them career opportunities lateron! In 1850–1851 there was much discussion about annexation into newly formed Susquehanna County but nothing came of it due lack of support!! In 1861 when SusquehannaCounty merged into Pennsylvania it did not include Chester so it reverted back to its own governance once again!! After Union victory over Confederate forces during the Civil War many businesses closed down due to wartime shortages however several churches & schools continued operation thanks largelyto local donations !! After ReconstructionLancaster county gave away over one hundred thousand acres (of land)to freedmen making Chester one of the largest townships in such giveaways!! However business closures did not stop here as more than fifty persons died from accidents or disease associated with farming during this time!!! Today nearly eighty percent of residents are descendants or have some relation(s)to those original pioneers who founded this small town sixty plus years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!
