In 1892, two brothers, John and George Chester, founded the Chetco Manufacturing Company in Chester, Pennsylvania. The company became a leading producer of high-capacity water pumps and other pump products. In 1925, the company merged with the International Harvester Corporation to form International Harvester Corporation (IHC). IHC continued to produce high capacity water pumps until it was acquired by Caterpillar Inc. in 2002.

Chester is located in Lackawanna County on the southern border of Allegheny County. According to the United States Census Bureau, Chester has a total area of 3 square miles (9 km²), all of it land. The first settler in what would become Chester was James Fenton in 1798. He and his family built a log cabin on what is now Second Street near what is now Park Avenue. In 1827, John Prentice bought 1/4 mile (0.8 km²) of land from Fenton and began building a sawmill on this tract known as Prentice's Mill Site. In 1829, Jno Alder bought two-thirds interest in Prentice's Mill Site from Prentice for $2,000 cash and erected a gristmill thereon which became known as Alder's Mills after him and his son John Alder Jr.. In 1830, Samuel Smedley purchased 2/3 interest in Alder's Mills from Alder for $1,500 cash and erected another gristmill thereon which became known as Smedley's Mills after him and his son Isaac Smedley Sr.. From these mills grew larger operations with multiple buildings including: Pottersville Forge Company (1830-1912), American Iron Works (1858-1914), Ziegler & Brown Brewing Company (1890-) In 1865 when Union general Ulysses S Grant took control of eastern Pennsylvania following the American Civil War he ordered General George McClellan to march southward through Lancaster County into central PA to relieve pressure on General Robert E Lee at Gettysburg Castle where Third Corps under General Philip Sheridan were about to attack Confederate forces entrenched near Monocacy Hill In order not to start an open battle between Union forces advancing northward towards Gettysburg while thousands more men were needed at Monocacy Hill Grant instead decided to march eastward through Lancaster County using First Corps under General William Tecumseh Sherman instead This order caused heavy civilian casualties as over 2/3ousand soldiers died trying to reach relief at Gettysburg rather than marching southwards . After reaching Chambersburg about two hours later McClellan found out that Lee had withdrawn his forces back up Monocacy Hill so he cancelled their attack without any loss or gain whatsoever Aftermath many people believe that ifGranthadmarchsouthwestrathertheneastwardthroughLancasterCountyhewould havewonthebattleat Gettysburg
