The area that would become Chester was fully settled by 1795 when a group of farmers from Northumberland County purchased 8,000 acres (3 km2) of land north of present-day Chester on the Susquehanna River. The community name originated with John Chester who bought 4 square miles (10 km2) of land from George Washington in 1795 for $4 per acre ($/ha). John used his new land as a farmstead and named it "Chester". In 1812, lawyer James Hinton purchased 5 square miles (15 km2) east of present-day Chester and renamed it "Hinton Township". In 1868, Samuel Morse donated 3 acres (1 ha) west of present day Main Street to form Morse Park which became one of the original communities in Erie County. In 1911, after years of effort by local citizens and officials alike, work began on developing what would become zip code 16201 which included much of what is now downtown Chester. That same year also saw the opening of Keystone Lake Recreation Area which provides swimming and fishing access to both lakefront property and surrounding countryside.

Additionally there are several colleges located nearby including Carnegie Mellon University (), Dickinson School (), Temple University () and York University ().
