When the first rifles were developed in America, they were made with black powder. The powder had to be imported from Europe and so it was expensive and time-consuming to make. As a result, most of the early American rifle cartridges were made with cordite (a mixture of sandalwood and lead). This type of ammunition was difficult to use and could not be reloaded. However, eventually, people realized that using white powder would make rifles more accurate. White powder is less powerful than blackpowder and therefore requires a bit more effort to fire. Consequently, Ammo manufacturers began manufacturing loads of white Powder ammunition specifically for American firearms. Cordite became less common as a source of ammunition because it was too difficult to produce/store and its price increased significantly when it did become available again. Eventually all types of Ammunition were produced in Chesterfield Townshipback in 1795 when Nicholas Ives opened his first Shot Shop on Market Street

Chester is a town in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, located in and around the Chester County borough of Northumberland. As of the 2010 census, the population was 19,599. The name "Chester" is derived from English settlers who named their village after the city of Chester in England. The first known inhabitants of what is now Chester Township were Native Americans; they may have beenatarsi (cattle) traders from Illinois or other nearby states that passed through this area on their way to British posts at Yorktown and Trenton. By 1796, however, all but one inhabitant of what are now Northumberland Township had fled to Canada due to economic hardship brought on by war with Great Britain and open hostility towards the United States by many Loyalists. In 1814, John Dickinson laid out a township for himself within present-day Chester County; it was named after him as well as for his father's birthplace in Scotland (Chestershire). The first settler arrived here about 1800: Samuel Greenidge built a log cabin on 400 acres (1 km²) he purchased from Peter Beecham near modern day Uniontown PA., just east of where Philadelphia's Chestnut Hill neighborhood stands today. A second settler came soon afterward: George Stephenson brought over his blacksmith shop and forge from Manchester, England in 1817 to start an iron works here which became one of America's leading producers of wrought iron until its closure during World War II. With few exceptions, early residents built simple utilitarian dwellings made mostly out oflogs or logs augmented with earth and mortar; some smallLog Cabin Houses still stand today along Route 322 between Harrisburg & Yorktown Roads - evidence that these pioneer pioneers did not altogether forget about their Scottish roots! In 1824 James Kapp set up a gristmill on Beaver Creek southeast of present-day Lancaster and began grinding corn for local farmers westward into Berks County; this mill remains operational today as part of Keystone Cereal Mills Inc., one stop on your tour throughout Lancaster County! In 1830–32 Isaac Stevens set up a tannery on Sideling Hill northeast cornerofpresent-dayNorthumberlandandLancasterTownships adjacenttothe future siteofPhiladelphia; this tannery continued operating until 1958 when it closed because there was no market for leather products in Northeast Pennsylvania during those days! One resident immortalized by history is Elijah Whitehead who settled in what is now Northumberland Township circa 1800 – years before European settlement even began there! Elijah’s descendants continue to reside there to this day – many thanks to Mrs. Whitehead’s efforts over many years past to promote heritage tourism attractions associated with her ancestor’s land! Today much has changed since those early days when only basic needs like food, shelter and transportation were available close at hand… though some things remain very similar including access to quality education both formal & informal via public schools such as Kinnett Valley Area High School (& newly opened William Penn Charter School), easy access to Major League Baseball games played at Citizens Bank Park (home plate being located just steps away from our high school), shopping opportunities available at nearby mall locations like The Mall at Kingstowne & SEPTA Regional Rail lines stops right outside our door – & more importantly…..a sense that we are all part OF SOMETHING BIGGER than ourselves!!
