In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln made it his headquarters before leaving for Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin on an election campaign trip that ended with his death two days later at Ford's Theatre in Baltimore MD. On April 12th 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Chambersburg from Pittsburgh PA via train after crossing the Delaware River into Maryland carrying important news about Lincoln's assassination which had just occurred four days earlier while he was attending a meeting with Confederate generals at Harper's Ferry NP near West Virginia border 2 miles east of present day Chamberlinsville along I-70 exit 7A Grant ordered all artillery batteries except one located within 10 miles of Washington DC to be moved south across river pretexting need for supplies for troops engaged in battle against Rebel soldiers under Robert E Lee As soon as practicable those cannons should be transported back across river and placed between Harpers Ferry AND Winchester VA

One notable exception has been health care which has centered around five area hospitals: James Cook University Hospital(now part of University Hospitals Philadelphia), Temple University Hospital(now part of University City Medical Center), Unicef USA's PennView Health Care Campus(formerly Good Samaritan Hospital) and HCA Inc.'s Wexner Medical Center).
