The first permanent settler in what is now Chambersburg was Benjamin Snyder, who arrived in 1795. He and his family erected a log cabin on the western edge of present-day Chambersburg. Early settlers were farmers, but by 1800 they had developed into Merchants and Planters who named their community after themselves—Johnstown in honor of one of their many residences there. By 1825 Johnstown was home to over 100 people, including ministers Gideon Welles and Isaac Warner as well as General James Sully and John Armstrong McDowell. In 1828 growing business interests led to development of the nearby town of Gettysburg (now Dunmore) which grew rapidly due to its strategic location near two major military engagements during the American Civil War: First Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863 and Second Battle of Gettysburg on October 14th, 1864. After Gettysburg's fall, Chambersburg continued to grow rapidly with various businesses becoming successful such as flour milling and sheep herding until it attained its current size with 11,000 residents by 1900 When railroad access became available through PA Dutchtown in 1865, Chamberburg quickly became an important junction for travelers between Pittsburgh (then called Allegheny) and Philadelphia (then known as "the city"). With this growth came increased commercial activity that caused portions of downtown to become rundown and abandoned; however, chamber members rallied around a vision for revitalization that saw downtown replaced with a new library/cultural center/arts district while parts of east central square were renovated into an array of restaurants/bars/nightlife options In recent years efforts have been made to revive Downtown Chambersburg by demolishing some older buildings and replacing them with modernist architecture designed by local architects like Chuck Brownlee Architects This approach has created mixed reactions from some residents who feel that removing historic landmarks does not always equate to preserving history; while others feel that these changes are necessary for sustainability reasons given the amountof traffic congestion Downtown experienced during the past few decades In addition to its role as county seat – which remains unchanged since 1800 – Chambersburg also houses several government offices including: chambers court house where Judicial District Court Proceedings are held; state prison located adjacent to town hall; sheriff’s office headquarters; Census Bureau Building; Office Of Central Statistics building which includes an underground garage used for storage purposes only; among other public entities housed within or directly adjacent thereto include: School District No 1 - which operates both schools within town limits (four Grades K-8); Borough Of Northumberland - whose governing body consists exclusively thereof except for matters pertaining thereto concerning borough status or powers herein granted etc.; fire department consisting principally thereof plus three engines & five horses

Chambersburg was founded by George Chambers in 1792. The first post office was established in 1802. In 1838, it became a town and was consolidated with nearby Clearfield Township on March 1, 1938. On November 14, 2006, Chambersburg voters approved an amendment to the City Charter that designated it as an open-air museum dedicated to the history and culture of the region from pre-historic times to present day. The original German settlers who arrived in what is now Cambria County were farmers who had come overland from Germany during the winter of 1793/94. They named their new settlement "Hershey" after one of their family's farm buildings near Philadelphia which they had seen while traveling eastward on their way to start a new life in America. George Chambers purchased land for himself and his brother Jacob at what is now Easton Street and North High Street in what are today Centre Township on February 10, 1792 – two days before Philadelphia would become its capital city under General Washington's command during his drive southward across Pennsylvania during Operations Ramapo and Saratoga campaign (July–September 1777). By early September 1792, four weeks after General Washington's crossing of Delaware River into Maryland Heights,[2] he had erected a small frame house at what is now 15th–16th Streets (now York Street) within sight ofpresent day Chambersburg.[3][4] That same year also saw incorporation as a borough by charter from portions of Clearfield Township;[5][6][7] however this did not occur until 1838 when all but three wards were detached from Clearfield Township to form newly created Chambersburg Borough with its own Mayor/Councilors instead of being under the jurisdiction or control of either township center.[8][9] George Waddell Avenue running southwest from downtown Philly towards Hershey served as primary business street throughout much of early 19th century because there wasn't yet anything like modern arterial streets in those days; Main Street ran parallel along Valley Forge Road through central PA back then! Typical pioneer architecture prevailed: One story log home surrounded by logs support wall with low roofs typical for early 1800s pioneer dwellings...
