Chambersburg is a city in and the county seat of Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 93,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Butler County were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1681. They named their new land "Netherlands." In 1765, when Pennsylvania was created as a state, Netherland became Butler County. The first courthouse was built in 1767 on Market Street in downtown Chambersburg. In 1814, George Washington traveled through Butler County on his way to Yorktown and stayed at the Great Meadows Farm near present-day Allentown before continuing on to Williamsport for dinner with General James Wilkinson and other military leaders. Some sources say that Washington rode into town on horseback from Great Meadows after stopping at the nearby Mechanics' Hall Tavern where he had dinner with fellow officers under Major John Armstrong (1755–1837), one of the founders of Pittsburgh. In 1815-16, during the Mexican War (1819-20), General Andrew Jackson's forces invaded and conquered Mexico City, ending Spanish rule over that country for more than two centuries. For this event, President James Kappner presented him with a gift of 20 acres (8 hectares) of land east of Mobile Chapel Road near what is now Forbes Elementary School in Chambersburg Township; it formed part of Jackson's victory parade through that city on November 15th 1825 as he took possession of Mexican territory west of Mobile Chapel Road following his victory over Santa Anna's army at Buena Vista Hill four days earlier. On July 1st 1840 - just three years after Allegheny Valley Railroad began operations - Chambersburg became incorporated as an independent municipality with a population Of 10 residents according to census records from 1840 which lists only 8 people living within its borders including 5 men and 3 women! From this point forward until incorporation as an incorporated municipality by act of Congress in 1865 there would be no growth or expansion within our boundaries until 1911 when we annexed neighboring boroughs: Northumberland (now Monroeville) & Westmoreland (now Meadville). On January 1st 1865 we achieved municipal Unincorporation status becoming "Chambersburg Borough" once again experiencing limited growth until 1971 when we annex'd Beaver Falls & Bellefontaine along with much needed development leading to today’s currentTotal Population Of 95,569

It is the most populous municipality in Montgomery County and the second-most populous municipality in Pennsylvania after Philadelphia. The town was founded by John Chambers in 1799. It became a borough ofPhiladelphia on December 14, 1853. On February 3, 1907, it received township status from Montgomery County and became one of the five townships of Philadelphia metropolitan area on October 1, 2007. As a result of this change, Chambersburg merged with Harford Township to form a single city-county government with a total population of 381,840 as of 2019
