Chambersburg is a town in McKean County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,831 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first European to visit Chambersburg was Captain John Smith on October 14, 1714. He named it "Cheyney." The town was founded by James Irvine in 1768 and laid out according to a plan by Colonel Thomas Pennant. Chambersburg became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the American Revolution because of its easy access to freedom fighters and its close proximity to Philadelphia. In 1824, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through on their way from Harrisburg to Yorktown and left behind a pile of cannons and military equipment which still stands today as one of Chambersburg's most visible reminders of its past. In 1865, when Pennsylvania seceded from the Union, Chambersburg became one of four towns in McKean County that joined what would become Delaware County. During this time period, many businesses closed down due to competition from larger towns within Delaware County such as Wilmington or Dover. However, Chamberlinians continued to thrive despite these challenges and today make up much of the community's social fabric along with their distinctive architecture which has been called "the architectural equivalent of Appalachian culture". Today Chambersburg continues its proud tradition as an agricultural center with crops such as apples, tomatoes, corn (maize), hay (barnyard animals) and soybeans being prolific producers; however dairy farming also plays a significant role in the community’s economy with milk processing plants located throughout the community including two currently operated by John Deere subsidiary JDS Foods Incorporated The original buildings in downtown are examples of Federal style architecture dating back to around 1800-1825. These include: The State House (1768), Central Market (1800), Presbyterian Church (1824), Court House Annex (1827) and Post Office Annex (1830). One notable structure notABLE from this time is The Mechanics Institute built between 1834 and 1840 which served as both a school for local mechanics apprenticeship training new residents coming into town after settling hereabouts along with providing day care for children until about 1860 when it fell into disrepair due to lack of use/funding until finally being abandoned in 1984 following renovation/upkeep; see below photo accompanying article discussing history & restoration project There are several extant commercial structures included among them are: The Herberger Bros Antiques Store opened 1935 - relocated 2005 across I-676 south from Main Street off Marcellus Street; Mennonite Brethren Church - first meetinghouse built c 1830 near present day intersection Of Washington & Rte 422 - remains operational; Second Presbyterian Church erected 1838 at corner OF Washington & Nuhile Streets next door to Herberger Bros Antiques store; Third Presbyterian Church erected 1896 at corner OF Washington & Hwy 622 east side opposite post office

Chambersburg was a small town in the state of Pennsylvania at the time of its incorporation in 1792. It was located on the Susquehanna River, about thirty miles (48 km) south-southwest of Pittsburgh. The town had a population of only 100 people when it was founded and grew to over 1,000 by 1800. Its growth came about through two factors: its location on the river and its position as an important transportation center for goods brought downriver from surrounding counties. In addition to being a major commercial center, Chambersburg also served as a military post during the Revolutionary War because it lay close to key battlefields. The town's early history is filled with mystery and adventure. For example, one story tells of an early settler named John Stephenson who discovered coal and oil near Chambersburg while exploring for new land in what is now West Virginia. When he brought these valuable resources back to his settlement, local Native Americans reportedly scalped him alive because they believed he had stolen their land! Another account says that Chambersburg was founded by two young men named James and John Armstrong who were driving cattle north from Pittsburgh when they noticed some beautiful hills ahead on what would become known as Armstrong's Hill. They decided to stop there for lunch and built the first temporary home there! Despite its humble beginnings, Chamberlin eventually grew into one of Pennsylvania's most prominent towns. In 1814, it became the capital city of this newly formed state; and in 1828, it became the permanent capital after Philadelphia moved away. By 1830, Chamberlin had been renamed Gettysburg after General Robert Ewart Gettysburg, who fought in both World Wars I and II as an American general. During those years, Chamberlin also saw heavy political activity due to its strategic importance as a crossroads between East Tennessee and West Virginia Moreover, many famous people have lived or worked here including Ulysses S Grant (founder of modern day Kansas), Woodrow Wilson (presidential candidate 1912), Franklin D Roosevelt (1942-45 president), Edward Snowden (former National Security Agency contractor). Although today Chambersburg is largely abandoned by residents – though some businesses still operate - its past makes it an interesting destination for historians looking into Pennsylvania's dramatic transformation from frontier society to burgeoning metropolis during the 19th century
