Chambersburg, Pennsylvania was a small town located in the Susquehanna Valley of West Virginia from 1815 to 1865. The population of Chambersburg peaked at over 30,000 in 1860 and it had shrunk to under 10,000 by 1870. However, gun manufacturing continued to thrive in the town until the late 19th century. In particular, muzzleloading guns became very popular in this time and Chambersburg became known as the "Gun City." Gun parts history in Chambersburg can be traced back to 1815 when John Smeaton founded a manufactory of muzzleloading pistols at his home on High Street. Smeaton's company continued production until 1842. From then on, gun parts production grew rapidly and by 1860 there were more than 100 businesses employing approximately 2200 workers in Chambersburg. By 1870 only 8 businesses remained within the boundaries of the town and most of these were firearms dealers. However, gun manufacturing still played an important role in Chambersburg society and many local luminaries such as Congressman James Witherspoon (1811-1882) used their positions to promote gun control measures. In addition, chamber music concerts featuring prominent local musicians often featuredgun shows that drew large crowds. During World War II much of what is now known about firearm manufacturing was lost due to bombing raids on German-owned factories but evidence exists that munitions manufacturers produced firearms for America's war effort during World War II including contributions to Project Paperclip which led to the development of Nazi weapons

Chambersburg is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Chambersburg were French traders and missionaries in 1749. The town was established as a trading post on the Susquehanna River by Colonel John Forbes in 1776 and was named after Sir George Chambers, 1st Baronet (1685-1751). In 1825, General James Kempton captured two American cannon from an Indian force near present-day Chambersburg and placed them in Fort Mifflin opposite the town for display at Philadelphia's Academy of Sciences. In 1827, with peace having been restored in America following the Mexican War, President Andrew Johnson ordered that all fortifications be destroyed except for one at Fort Mifflin which should be used only for artillery training purposes. In 1838, Samuel Colt opened a gunsmithing shop in what is now Chambersburg. firearms manufacture began here permanently in 1845 with Benjamin Butler's founding of Butler Firearms Company; this company became known as Colt Firearms Corporation until it merged into Remington Arms Company in 1907. Ammunition production also commenced here early on with cloth bullets being developed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and Alfred Nobel among others before World War I interruption when US munitions restrictions halted European munitions exports to America during that conflict; reloading facilities were soon constructed including one built on West Market Street across from today's University of Pittsburgh campus housing some forty reloaders/workers.) After World War II ended military production ceased entirely leaving Chamberlin with just a few small businesses manufacturing items such as Kevin Bacon cufflinks!
