Chambersburg is a small town in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,167 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County. Chambersburg is located on the Susquehanna River and about 20 miles (32 km) east of Pittsburgh. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Chambersburg was founded byplansters from Pennsylvania in 1799. In 1814, General John Forbes built Fort Pitt on the Susquehanna River to protect trading interests along that river. The fort served as a center for trade with Native Americans and was later used by American forces during the War of 1812. In 1800, James Lane built a mill on the confluence of two rivers near present-day Chambersburg. That mill became known as Lane's Mills after James Lane's son-in-law, David Thornhill, developed it into a successful business empire that included mills throughout central Pennsylvania and Ohio. The Thornship familyowned Chambersburg mills until they sold them in 1925 to Saginaw Steel Corporation for $2 million dollars ($). In 1925 also came development in nearby Shamokin when Philadelphia based steel fabricator Humble & Company erected a new plant there to produce high quality steel products under license from Saginaw Steel Corporation In 1940, Chambersburg earned its nickname "The City of Industry" when PWK Paper Products moved their headquarters from Newark, New Jersey to what then seemed like an unlikely location – right next door to one of America’s oldest textile factories operated by Jannie Rankin & Sons – across the street from where today’s I-75 motorway runs parallel to Route 22 just outside town limits PWK Paper Products operations continued through World War II until 1948 when all other plants were closed down due to wartime production shortages . Afterward there was little manufacturing activity in town save for small amount done by local companies such as Alcoa and Bethlehem Steel until recent years when Boeing announced it would be building their new engine plant just north of town Chambersburg experienced significant growth during Barack Obama's time as President because many large Manufacturing companies decided to locate here rather than move away because of President Obama's aggressive stimulus program which encourages job creation Today most manufacturing activity takes place within close proximity to PNC Park which has led Chamberbergians nicknamed themselves "The Parkers". Many residents commute into Pittsburgh or other nearby cities each day while others enjoy country living with excellent public schools and access to numerous recreational opportunities

Chambersburg was founded in 1799 by John Chambers and his brother James as an outpost on the Allegheny River between Cumberland and Westmoreland counties. In 1815, Chambersburg became a state capital; it remained so until 1861 when it became a city. The main business district of Chambersburg is located around Main Street and its two branches: One runs east-west, the other north-south. Other major streets include Lawrence Street (north), Campbell Avenue (east), Market Square (south) and Park Avenue (west). The first settlers in what would become Chambersburg were John Chambers and James Hall who arrived from Scotland in 1799. They built a log cabin on the banks of the river near where present day Main Street meets Armstrong Creek. The early population of Chamberburg consisted of five families only: John, James, William, David and their wives Eliza Jane and Sarah Ann; four children were born to these parents: Samuel(1798), Peter(1801), Martha Jane(1803)and Johnathan(1807). This original community was located along Beaverdam Creek about two miles west of where it currently stands on Route 21 just east of University Drive/US 14 junction with National Forest Rd 6056 which goes into southwestern Armstrong County under US 14 name going further northwest to the Mifflin borough boundary before turning back due to lack of development thereabouts In 1816 William Gaskill came over from Ireland with his family consisting six persons including himself father Henry Gaskill age 24 sons Daniel age 20 Michael age 16 Josephage 12 Thomas age 10 also sent over one slave named Hannah with her husband Adam who had come over previous year en route from Maryland or Virginia but they did not set up permanent residence here until after Williams death which caused some consternation among those who had been brought over especially since they had no rights whatsoever under British law as stated by George Washington during his Farewell Address wherein he said "the people that have borne arms against our government for upholding its independence hereby offer themselves to be put within Its limits without any compensation" This situation changed however after General Andrew Jackson's victory at New Orleans leading to Ulysses S Grant becoming General President instead of Jefferson Davis giving many freedmen new opportunities like voting rights which eventually led to Reconstruction era following American Civil War ending slavery Thereafter many Germans began moving into this area because there were few good jobs available outside Philadelphia or Baltimore so they started purchasing land here cheap making this community what it is today James Wistar served as Mayor from 1840-48 & 1860-64 & 1870-74 & 1880-88 pioneer period ended about 1830s when large influxes of Europeans started arriving followed by Reduction Act 1790 bringing more than 400 Welsh immigrants known as "Cumberlanders" here except for three families who left before 1800 due to poor soil quality or religious objections inability to pay high taxes plus others such as Potts family got help from Govtres friend Colonel Fort Hood getting him land grant for 200 acres near village center growing tobacco while still living elsewhere Soil quality improved markedly during 19th century thanks largely to heavy investment in education&railroads resulting in dramatic dropoff in numbers coming here until about 1920s when crime rates soared following World War I & Great Depression
