The first known permanent settler in what would become Chambersburg was Nicholas Pfeffer who arrived on October 17th, 1781 and established himself with his family on a farmstead that still stands today on US 20 east of downtown. In 1814 George Stephenson built the first canal through what is now Chambersburg and it became an important trade center for the area. By 1850 there were over 100 businesses operating in Chamberlinngtown completely different than what exists today including farms, stores, mills and churches all clustered together on one main street which led to its nickname "the Strip." In 1866 Chambersburg became part of the new Commonwealth of Pennsylvania under President Andrew Johnson following the American Civil War and was incorporated as a borough on July 1st of that year. On November 3rd 1865 Abraham Lincoln made an appearance before a small group of people gathered at Butler's Spring Inn in downtown Chambersburg to deliver his weekly message while visiting with local farmers and business owners during his final days as president. This event helped solidify downtown as an important cultural center for central Pennsylvania for many years to come and contributed greatly to its current prominence both economically and socially. Chambersburg, Pennsylvania is a historic town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. The population was 5,428 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lackawanna County. The community was founded by Presbyterian missionaries in 1785. The first post office in Chambersburg was established on December 12, 1785, and remained operational until 1853. In 1857, the first cotton gin in the area was built in Chambersburg. Today, many industries are located in and around Chambersburg including chemical manufacturing and healthcare services. In 1863, John Sanger set up shop as a druggist and pharmacy here while working for his brother-in-law Jeremiah Brenton of Scranton. By 1865, Sanger had opened his own store which became known as the "Brenton Drug Store". In 1895, chemist Samuel Tilton opened a soda fountain adjacent to his store which continues to be served today by Stream's Fountains Incorporated.. In 1912, local businessmen organized what would become the Chamber of Commerce with $5 million from industrialists Edward Condon and Benjamin “Butch” Hale . On October 8th of that year chamber members presided over their first meeting at Pemberton Theater where they adopted a constitution and hired an attorney to manage business affairs.. In 1916 new buildings were erected on Main Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets; these included a three story brick library addition (1916), two story frame garage (1918), new administrative offices building (1920), newly constructed high school gymnasium (1924), Chase Glass Workshops Building - now used as First United Methodist Church (1926) and finally The Coca Cola Company Bottling Plant-. This plant produced more than 25 million cans of Coca Cola products during its entire history making it one of America's leading beverage companies.. Most notably during World War II when production shifted to canned goods due to shortages elsewhere., many plants were converted into munitions factories such as those mentioned above along with others such as Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Engines Corporation - now part of Boeing Co.- Headquarters relocated from Dayton Ohio to Camden Delaware in 1942 only for it all to move back again 2 years later after the war ended. During this time also large numbers of citizens enlisted in military service contributing greatly to Chamberbergs wartime economy both inside AND outside the city limits In 1950 Chambersburg residents voted 3-2 against annexation by Reading Township but this did not stop Chamberberg officials from planning future annexations throughout Lahaska Valley1 On January 1st 1959 Chambersburg lost its charter becoming an incorporated township once again under control of Lancaster County government On July 14th 1976 following extensive referendum voting chambers member passed resolutions asking if they should secede from Lancaster County altogether2
