Ammunition history in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania began with the first shot fired in the area on October 1, 1802. The site of today's Chambersburg was then part of the Indian Territory and arsenalmaster James Caldwell built a cannon at what is now the corner of Sixth and Market streets. On that date, General David Hunter attacked an enemy encampment near present-day Uniontown and ordered his artillerymen to fire on any Indians they saw. One gunshot missed its target and ricocheted off a tree nearby, wounding two men. Caldwell immediately placed new rounds into his cannon and opened fire, hitting six targets including three Indians. This event marks the beginning of what would become one of America's most important military industries. Over time, other arsenalmasters followed Caldwell in building cannons for use by local militias and U.S. Army forces. By 1814, over thirty cannon were employed in the area providing firepower for both local law enforcement officers and Ulysses S Grant's army during the War of 1812. Ammunition production grew even more during this time as technologies improved such as cast-iron barrels which made firing projectiles much more reliable than earlier wooden stocks. In 1827, following Lancaster County's admission to Pennsylvania as a separate state, ammunition production moved from Lancaster County to Chambersburg when government regulations changed allowing for such activity within the new state boundaries. In 1829-30 construction began on what is now known as "The Arsenal" which would later become home to many American munitions companies including Bethlehem Steel Company (now Arkema), Molyneux Corporation (now Alcoa), Armstrong Whitworth Company (now Remington Arms), Browning Armory Company (now Browning&Wesson) among others over nearly fifty years until it closed its doors in 1975 due to dwindling demand for arms products worldwide combined with advancements in technology%. Chambersburg is a town in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Chambersburg was founded by George Chambers in 1794. The first store in town was built on present-day Main Street and opened on July 1, 1794. In 1828, Chambersburg became the county seat of Huntingdon County and namesake of the county courthouse which still stands today on Market Square. On October 25, 1829, the Pennsylvania General Assembly passed an act creating Westmoreland County within Huntingdon County based on recommendations from commissioners appointed to investigate western lands that had been offered for sale to settle emigrants from Great Britain. On December 3rd 1830, Westmoreland County was created with its own courthouse located in Chambersburg as well as a jail and other governmental buildings. In 1848, George Washington Matthews purchased 4500 acres (2 km²) of land east of present-day Chambersburg along the Allegheny River for $600. He named it Matthews Park after his brother-in-law who had contributed money to purchase it. On November 8th 1850, Matthews donated 500 acres (2 km²) more land to build what would become "Chambersburg Township". The first house built there was called "The Meadows" because it sat atop high ground near wherepresent-day Central Avenue meets Campbell Road. By 1865 there were over 100 homes in Chambersburg Township and 2 businesses including a post office and a millinery shop open for business only during winter months when services were provided by local residents or men employed by mills outside of town due to lack of transportation into town during wintertime On January 1st 1870 Chamberlain township lost its charter status when it merged with neighboring Milton township On January 1st 1870 Chamberlaintownship lost its charter status when it merged with neighboring Miltontownship
