However, following the war's end there was significant decline throughout much of western Pennsylvania due to economic hardship caused by technological advances such as automobiles and television. Today, despite some challenges posed by current political conditions within Western Pennsylvania (including high levels of poverty), Carlisle has made significant progress over recent decades towards becoming an thriving community with strong social ties that supports both local businesses and regional economy overall. Carlisle is located in the Susquehanna Valley of Pennsylvania, about two hours east of Philadelphia. The town was founded by General George Washington in 1781 as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. It grew rapidly after wagon trains arrived there to trade with the Native Americans and settlers. In 1814, Carlisle became the capital of what was then known as Cumberland County. In 1868, Carlisle was renamed for General pathologist and physician James M. Carlisle, who had served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. After he died in 1865, his wife donated land to create a medical school at Carlisle which opened its doors in 1870. In 1795, Carlisle was founded as a village by Rev. John Dickinson and his wife, Susanna. It was named for the Danish city of Aalborg (Aarhus), which then had a population of only 10 people. The first settler in Carlisle was Dr. John Snyder, who built a cabin on the north side of Market Square in 1801. The town quickly grew and by 1821 it had 587 residents. In 1825, the first school in Carlisle opened and soon after many other businesses were established including an insurance company and a grocery store. In 1832, the first post office was opened in Carlisle and soon after it became known as one of the "rasty" or fashionable towns in Pennsylvania because of its high qualityof life and well-to-do citizens. In 1861, when Gettysburg occurred, most of the small town disappeared during the Civil War with only a few buildings remaining until 1945 when they were restored to their prior condition
