Carlisle, Pennsylvania is a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,257 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The community was named after the Danish general and mapmaker Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855), who lived there in 1793-94. The first settler in Carlisle was John Bachiewicz in 1792. Bachiewicz had come to America from Poland with his family and settled on York Township near present day Carlisle. He founded a log cabin where he continued to live until 1812 when he sold his land to Abraham Davenport for $1800 dollars. At this time, most of Lancaster County were Indian Reservations which were governed by chiefs and warriors known as "Mikvehawks". In 1814, under pressure from Ulysses S. Grant's forces during the Mexican–American War, President James K. Polk ordered American troops to withdrawn from all Indian reservations except for four: Mikvehawk's Reservation along the Allegheny River; Fort Pitt; Fort Erie; and several miles around Carlisle proper. This order represented a major victory for Ulysses S., since it removed many potential enemies from within or outside of Lancaster County while allowing settlers access to valuable resources within the reservation boundaries without fear of conflict or retribution by native groups). The withdrawal also created an opening for white settlement in what would become one of Lancaster County's most prosperous towns – today's downtown Carlisle features evidence of early development including homes built by Bachiewicz himself as well as stores and taverns operated by warrant officers working under military orders issued out of Philadelphia Commandery headquarters back then on Second Avenue between Chestnut Street and Market Streets NE (now Dupont Circle NW). In 1825 Johann Gottlieb Schneider set up a gristmill at what is now corner Washington Street and Spring Garden Road SE which became one of the town's earliest businesses (Schneider still operates a small mill here today). By 1830 over 50 families had settled here including many Germans who had followed German immigrants into America during their flight from Bremen during World War I - another sign that Germany had regained its pre-war status as one of America's most powerful ethnic blocs after centuries of exclusion/oppression! Over time other English speaking people arrived such as Scotsmen, Irishmen, Swedes, Canadians etc but Main Street remained essentially German until Borough Council passed an ordinance forbidding any more foot traffic on main street between 7 p.m.–5 a.m., effective November 1st 1912 citing "the great inconvenience caused thereby by numerous drunkenness fostered among our mechanics" – resulting in some Potters & Masons moving into central business district buildings starting right away instead! In 1846 three brothers started farming northeast of town on land that now forms part of Northumberland Township: Elijah Purdy (1801-1882), Isaac Purdy (1802-1890) and Jacob Swartzendruber (1804-1875). They laid out grid patterns for their farmlands using surveyors' lines drawn on topographic maps dating back to 1795 which remain largely unchanged to this day! One such pattern runs east-west just north btwn US 22nd & 24th Streets NW across Braddock Heights Rd.; another runs southeast- northwest between US 2nd & 4th Avenues SW crossing Squirrel Hill Rd.; yet others follow Elmira Road southward towards Lewiston before turning west again towardstown – examples include Beaver Run Farmstead located off Cedar St., Westmoreland Manor Farmstead located off Ridge Road NW just past junction with PA 287E (& later state highway 287W), Eastview Farms situated southwestownof Centreville Rd./US Lebanon Turnpike/PA 267E (& later state highway 267W), Deerfield Farms situated northeastownof PA 283E(&later state highway 283W)…..There are endless variations worthy OF exploration but they all share one common thread: they were developed primarily because large numbers Polish immigrants chose to settle there rather than move westward into richer agricultural areas closer to big cities like Pittsburgh orPhiladelphia’

However, it grew rapidly from then until its annexation by Pittsburgh in 1823. The local economy was based primarily on agriculture and Manufacturing until World War II when new industries such as automotive manufacturing became dominant in the area. By 1950, there were over 20 businesses located inCarlisle township with a population of over 1,500 people. Today, the township remains an agricultural community with a significant population of farmers and ranch hands who are responsible for most of the economic activity within its borders
