Carlisle, Pennsylvania was once a small town located in the heart of the Susquehanna Valley. Today, it is an important manufacturing center and home to most of the optometrists in Pennsylvania. The town's history can be traced back to 1795 when two men by the name of Brown started a store in what is now known as Market Square. From that time until 1876, Carlisle was essentially a stop on the road between Philadelphia and Harrisburg. One of the first things that Brown did when he opened his store was build a scopes room in order to sell telescopes to visitors from across Pennsylvania. In 1876, however, he sold his business and moved away from Carlisle altogether. It wasn't until 1908 that Carlisle regained its former prominence as an Optometrist center after doctors began moving into town from larger metropolitan areas. Since then,Carlisle has been home to some of the most prominent optometrists in Pennsylvania including Dr. John Prentice and Dr. Jerry Sperling who are both currently among Pennsylvanian's highest ranking officials

The history of spotting scopes is a long and complex one. There are many different types of spotting scopes, each with its own unique capabilities and features. Here we will only be discussing the most common types of spotting scopes, those that have been used in most cases throughout history. One type of spotting scope known as an eyepiece microscope was first developed in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. It consisted of a small lens mounted on a portable stand and used to view objects at close range. The use of eyepieces allowed for the magnification needed to see details at objekt distances, making this instrument very useful for inspecting specimens and animals close up. During the 18th century, several other types of Spotting Scopes were designed which improved on the original Conte design. One such invention was the reflector telescope which utilized a mirror to focus light onto an object at a distance beyond what could be seen with eye vision alone. This allowed for great magnification but also created problems with how bright the object must be in order to be seen through the telescope optics. Another innovation during this time was called an objective lens, which increased brightness while maintaining maximum magnification. These new objective lenses became popularized during the Revolutionary War due to their use in battlefield telescopes as they permitted greater accuracy and detail when viewing targets up close. In 1868 German astronomer Julius Cossmann invented what is considered to be the first practical telescope consisting solely of two mirrors placed back-to-back so that both eyes could view simultaneously an image on each mirror instead of focusing it separately like earlier designs did. The Carlisle area has a long and varied history. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Carlisle were the Dutch in 1618. They founded a small town, New Amsterdam, on the east side of the Susquehanna River. The next year, English settlers arrived and founded the town of Carlisle on the west side of the river. In 1795, the United States acquired control of Pennsylvania from Great Britain and renamed it America. In 1802, Carlisle became a part of Pennsylvanian Township Number One. In 1814, it was made an incorporated borough by act of Congress. On November 3, 1868, it merged with neighboring boroughs (Hinkleburg and Mifflin) to form Borough of Carlisle. In 1901, Carlisle erected its own City Hall and library system. That same year saw its first election as mayor under an open-air voting system which continued until 1931 when machines were introduced for elections within city limits. From 1903 to 1916, Mayor John Spaight served two terms; he was also one of three chancellors who headed up Philadelphia's new government during that time period. In 1932-1933 Mayor Harry Wohl led a citywide campaign to build a new Municipal Stadium for use by all residents except those living in Philadelphian Borough (now known as Kensington). With help from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and other supporters, construction began in 1933 and was completed in 1937 after years of hard work by local civilians and soldiers who had been drafted into World War II nearby at Monmouth Battlefield near present day Harrisburg
