A post office called Carlisle was established in 1834 and remained in operation until it closed on December 12, 1907. In 1849, an act of Congress created what are now four universities: Penn State University (1856), Temple University (1892), Wagner College (1902) and Gettysburg College (1945). Penn State became one of America's first accredited public universities when it began operations on October 15th of that year under the name "Pennsylvania Agricultural Experiment Station". The town had its own school district from 1895-1965 but this system was abolished by Act No. 4 of 1965 which merged all school districts into one system statewide. The population growth rate for Carlisle has been steady over recent years with 7% every decade since 2000; however this has slowed somewhat recently due to factors such as joblessness among young adults combined with retirements among seniors – both groups have seen their numbers decline slightly since then!
