Carlisle is a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Carlisle were Dutch colonists from New Netherland in 1672. They built a trading post on the site of present-day Carlisle and named it Fort Orange after their ally and protector, the Dutch Prince Orange. The post was abandoned in 1718 when the British took over for the Dutch. A more permanent settlement was founded by Polish immigrants about 1795. It became known as Częstochowa ( translated as "Bridge over the River"). In 1807, General John Forbes decided to build a road through Lancaster County from Philadelphia to Harrisburg instead of going around it as proposed by earlier governors James Kintyre and Isaac Northup. The new road ran through Częstochowa and was called Forbes Road after General John Forbes. In 1814, a school was established in Carlisle with government support under an act of Congress passed that year providing for education for poor children within reach of eligible parents or guardians. This first public school operated until 1827 when converted into a barn and used as storage for local farmers until reactivated as part of Keystone State Normal School District No. 2 in 1933; today it is open to the public and houses exhibits on educational history during different periods throughout Susquehanna Valley Regional History Museum's collection! Ida Muhlenberg donated land near present day CarlisleSubmit via Google Earth The original brick buildings which still stand are those located at 111 S 5th St., just east of US 631 southbound upon entering town from PA 824 northbound Alternate Route 2 (now SR 10). These buildings were constructed circa 1870-1874 using bricks donated by Ida Muhlenberg who had also given land adjacent to this building lot towards future development which included: two schools (one high school/middle school), housing developments (later businesses), an Arena football game field now used for arts & crafts shows by local artists every November since 1978 (!), multiple churches including one currently being renovated into condominiums/apartments - all while sheared off her forested property line! A plaque honoring MrsMuhlenberg can be found outside her old home entrance along with several other pertinent historical items associated with this quite unique community truly Gems From Gilded Age America!

Carlisle is a town in Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,584 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous town in Lehigh County after Bethlehem. The area that now forms Carlisle was first settled by Germans in the early 1700s and was part of Southwark Township. On July 1, 1795, it incorporated as a borough under the name of Carlisle. In 1829, it became an unincorporated community within Centre County. On November 15, 1864, it became part of the newly created Lehigh County when all of Centre and Northumberland counties were merged into that state. In 1893, representatives from both towns met to discuss plans for a Carnegie library in each town. After much discussion and vote among themselves (with Carlisle abstaining), they decided that both towns would build their own libraries - with funds raised through local taxes being used to finance the other's project). The first Carnegie library was built in Carlisle on Main Street between Marlboro Road and Valley Drive in 1914-15 (it still stands today). In 1935-36, during World War II, Carlisle played host to one of the largest military exercises ever held in America – "Alaska Maneuvering Training". More than 140 warships from 20 countries participated; over 50% of all vessels called at sea were stationed here including battleships USS Wyoming (BB-48) and USS Nebraska (BB-56). At its conclusion 3 weeks later on December 2nd 1945 more than 3000 citizens had taken part including many military veterans who had returned home just days earlier following their service aboard ships or land forces serving overseas. The success of this exercise helped to invigorate Main Street where businesses began reopened soon afterward followed by new buildings erected for government use such as county courthouse annexes beginning in 1946 which are still extant today within city limits
