The first gun sights in Carlisle were a set of brass plates on the front door of the court house. The first use of firearms in this town was on October 25, 1755 when Captain John Armstrong used his rifle to take down a large animal that had been damaging property near the courthouse.
Carlisle is a community located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The population was 13,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle metropolitan area. Carlisle is known for its agricultural production and for its Midwestern culture. The town was first settled in 1786 by German immigrants who named it after their hometown of Celle, Germany. Carlisle grew rapidly as a result of transportation improvements made in 1827 by General George Washington Blount and his brother-in-law John Forbes Blair. In 1836, Congress passed an act that designated Carlisle the capital of what would become the United States of America. The town's growth slowed after the Civil War but resumed with a vengeance during Reconstruction in the 1870s due to its close proximity to Philadelphia and to moneyderived industry such as textiles, tobacco, agriculture, and shipping. In 1907, Carlisle became incorporated as a borough under Act 16 of that year. Since 2007, when Mayor Jim Kenney took office following the resignation of then-Mayor Rick Saccone, Carlisle has been facing several budget cuts which have led to increased crime rates and decreasing enrollment at local high schools. In February 2018 it was announced that Mayor Kenney would not seek reelection effective March 1st; he had been leading city government for six years without any run for re-election since taking office in 2007 despite having served two terms since becoming mayor

Carlisle, Pennsylvania is a town in Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 32,724 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Erie County. The first European settlers in what is now Carlisle were French-Canadian Canadiens who established a small community on the north side of the river near present day Academy Street and First Avenue in 1784. In 1814, these same Canadiens founded the town of Carlisle after they were forced out of Quebec by Great Britain following the Napoleonic Wars. The area around present day Academy Street and First Avenue became part of the new town and were named for Sir George Carlisle (1756–1825), an English general who had played a leading role in winning battles against Napoleon during his Grande Armée campaigns. In 1836, businessman John Witherspoon built himself a house on Third Street in what would become known as Witherspoon Heights. He continued to operate this business until his death in 1865 when it was passed down to his son John Augustus Witherspoon Jr., who continued to run it until his death in 1899. This period saw great growth for Carlisle as many immigrants arrived here during this time including Irishmen, Germans and Italians who all started their own businesses within short periods of time. 2 brothers - Abraham Lincoln (1811-1865) and Stephen Douglas (1814-1896) led American lives that shaped American politics right up until their deaths; Abraham Lincoln is buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery while Stephen Douglas is buried at Plymouth Meeting National Historical Park outside Philadelphia PA
Carlisle was founded by John Penn in 1795. The town was named after the Battle of Carlisle Heights, which took place in 1792. In 1814, it became a county seat of Lancaster County. In 1868, it became a city and remains so today.
