The town of Carlisle was founded by German settlers in 1795 and incorporated as a borough on February 14, 1825. The name for the village before incorporation was "Hinkle". On December 12, 1881, Hinkle became part of Carlisle when it annexed the nearby village of Woodsboro. The city's first store opened in 1854 and its first post office opened on September 25, 1861. By 1870, Carlisle had a population of 1,500 and become an agricultural center with haymaking being one of its most important industries. In 1902-1903 during the Panic of 1907–18 there were several fires that destroyed many buildings in downtown Carlisle including the local courthouse which served as both City Hall and jail until 1929. In 1930-1931 during World War II some residents built 105 air raid shelters dug into hillsides around town to provide temporary shelter from potential airstrikes while other residents raised cattle or grew crops while they awaited news of whether their cities would be bombed or not. After the war ended these shelters were dismantled and all but one are now gone due to vandalism or lack of interest by local officials since they no longer serve any purpose other than tourism attractions today. In 1957-1958 when Interstate 90 was constructed through town Center Street bypassing it for southbound travel only about half the original prewar number (about 280) cars parked along Center street were still there when I-90 came through; most have long been demolished or removed to make way for new development over time Today almost everything within easy walking distance either open public areas such as Market Square or contains something interesting like a museum etc... so if you're looking for an old backwater town with nothing going for it anymore then this might be your spot but if you're looking for something really unique then I'd recommend trying somewhere else
