By 1802, two stores had been established and trade grew rapidly with goods brought overland by wagonloads of settlers or shipped downriver by boat. In 1814, Captain Abraham Lincoln ordered all citizens to gather together to resist American forces besieging Fort Mifflin in Lancaster County during the Pennsylvanian War of Independence. Many residents deserted their homes and fled to other parts of Pennsylvania but about 100 men including many farmers formed an impromptu militia under Captains William Hartsfield and Isaac Pierson to resist British occupation. As night fell on September 11th(), they prepared to cross the Susquehanna River into British territory but were repelled by superior numbers from nearby Fort Mifflin which had been garrisoned only for training purposes according to General Edward Braddock's orders not meant for actual combat against English troops. After several days of skirmishes and failed efforts tocross the river at night using boats manned only by volunteers rather than regulars resulted in heavy losses for both sides; most significantly for the Germans when almost all their equipment was destroyed;[1][2] Tens of thousands more Americans followed Braddock's army as it marched towards Yorktown near present day Harrisburg where they ultimately lost their war against Great Britain 4 months later on October 19th().
