Butler is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,844 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Butler County after Somerset. The first settler in what is now Butler was George Haldeman who arrived on July 10th, 1798. He and his family had been living on the Susquehanna River east of present-day Butler when they moved to this area and founded the community of Haldemanstown which they named after themselves. On December 12th, 1814, Andrew Butler erected a log cabin near present-day Uniontown while he was still a resident of Haldemanstown. He became an early settler in what would become Butler County and owned several landholdings within its boundaries until his death in 1853. Andrew's son John Fenton Butler served as sheriff of Butler from 1830 to 1837 and as clerk of probate for three years from 1834 to 1840; he also served as justice of the peace for two years from 1840 to 1843; he later became a U.S. Congressman from Erie (PA). In 1860, John Fenton married Catharine McGeehan and together they founded the city of Allentown which grew rapidly due to their business acumen and other philanthropic endeavors throughout the midwest during the19th century – it has since become one of America's most significant cities with over 1 million residents (2010 estimate). After serving two terms as Speaker of the Pennsylvania House Of Representatives (1887–1890), John Fenton was elected governor by popular vote on November 3rd 1890 but resigned following allegations that he had sexually assaulted a young woman; he was impeached by Governor Samuel Tilden but acquitted by both houses of Congress before being re-elected on November 7th 1892 despite receiving only 78%ofthe vote against him – this led to his nickname "The People's Governor." He died one year later at age 82 after many illnesses including cancer – leaving behind an extensive political legacy that continues into this day. In addition to his legislative achievementsJohn Fenton also authored or coauthored 11 books including "A History Of The American Revolution", "History Of Western Pennsylvania" & "Life And Times Of Andrew Dickson White".
