Butler, Pennsylvania is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania located on the Susquehanna River. The population was 1,549 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and has a rich history dating back to 1795 when it was part of the Northwest Territory. The first settler in Butler was George Butler who arrived in 1795 from Augusta, Georgia. He founded what would become Butler Township and built a log cabin near present day Mifflinburg. In 1814, he married Sarah Thomson and together they started a farmstead named Thomson Manor which still stands today on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The Butlers were pioneers in agriculture and are credited with developing one of America's first large cotton plantations. They had six children: John, William (William Jr.), Eunice (Eleanor), Martha (Martha Ann), Elizabeth (Elizabeth) and Anna Maria. In 1827, George Butler sold his holdings to John Dickinson who renamed it Dickinson Manor after himself. In 1829-30, Mr. Dickinson added two more lots to his holdings which included portions of what are now Clearfield Township and Parkland Township; he also donated land for public square located at present day Beaver Falls Boulevard/Bellevue Avenue in what would become Butler County Courthouse Square. One year later, on October 2nd 1830, Mr .Dickinson died suddenly at home leaving behind three daughters - Caroline Stroud(1831-1902), Maynarda Stevenson(1833-1905)and Nellie Whitman(1835-1911). His will left all but 4 acres of his estate to Caroline Stroud & 4 acres to Maynarda Stevenson with remainder divided between Nellie Whitman & their father's widow Sarah Thomson

Butler is a small town located in Butler County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Butler was first settled by George Butler in 1798. He built a cabin on the edge of what is now known as Butler Township and named it Butlerstown. In 1814, he moved his family to what is now the community of Indianola and started a tannery there. In 1827, he established the village of Butler and renamed it after himself. In 1829, George Washington Marshall came through this area on his way to visit Ireland and saw that Butler had become an important commercial center due to its tannery and railroad connections. When he learned about Marshall's plans for western Pennsylvania, he decided to move his headquarters from Alexandria, Virginia to Butler so that he could help support the new capital region. This decision helped make Butler one of the most important towns in western Pennsylvania during this time period because it served as both Marshall's headquarters and local trade center. The growth of the steel industry in northeastern Pennsylvania led to an increase in demand for leather products from those who were producing steel mills in nearby Pittsburgh. To meet this demand, George Wickersham founded the Wickersham Leather Company in 1923 with two brothers-in-law from Philadelphia who owned a tannery there. The company became one of America's leading leather producers until its bankruptcy in 1970). The importance of agriculture also played a role in growing businesses around town such as Agricultural Equipment Corporation (AEC), which manufactured tractors; Lumbermen's Mutual Insurance Company (LUMIER) which represented lumber interests within town; Mrs Fenton's Bakery & Cafe (later known as Mrs Fenton's Place); Goudreau Bros Funeral Home; First National Bank & Trust Company; Atriputt Hardware Store; Electric Light & Power Co.; Mr John Peddle shoeshine shop; and United States Rubber Works Incorporated (USRW).
