Scope mounts have been a part of Butler, Pennsylvania since the 1800s. The first scope mount was erected in 1797 by Captain John Butler. In 1812, Captain Samuel H. Dickinson erected a second scope mount on the east side of North High Street in Butler. This mount was used by militia and other military personnel to view targets through their rifles. In 1827, Captain Isaac Sibley erected a third scope mount on the west side of High Street in Butler. This mount was used by farmers and others to view targets from their fields. In 1847,Captain George Prentice designed and built a fourth scope mount on the southeast corner of South High Street in Butler. This mount was used by farmers and others to view targets from their barns or homes. By 1850, all fourscope mounts were gone and replaced with new models that were more efficient for use with firearms. The first model of a Scope Mount was built by Captain J D Mills in 1852 which is still in use today! This new type of Scope Mount allowed firearms owners to see target at distances up to 100 yards without having to aim downrange. It also had an adjustable height platform for perfect sighting inside or outside any rifle stocks! In 1861, Captain Hiram Gans installed a fifth scopemount on the northwest corner of South High Street in Butler which he called “The Gans Rifle” Because it could be adjusted up or down so that shooters could better adjust their aiming position inside or outside any rifle stocks! This fifth mounted Scope Mount became known as the “Gans Gun” because its inventor –Captain Hiram Gans –was instrumental in making this type of Rifle easier to use for both infantrymen and cavalrymen alike!

Butler developed rapidly as a farming community during the 19th century due to its location on the Susquehanna River and its access to large markets for agricultural goods. Manufacturing became important during this time, with mills built around 1850 for flour, cheese, soap and other products. Much of today's downtown Butler was built during this time including First National Bank (1860), Masonic Temple (1877) and Bank of America building (1924). In 1925, when much of northeastern Pennsylvania were left high and dry following years of heavy rainfall within a short period of time due to Hurricane Agnes', Butler became one of several communities across western Pennsylvania to install water systems using artesian wells providing drinking water for citizens from early 1927 until well operators stopped producing water table levels below 300 feet deep in 1951 due to environmental concerns about potential hydraulic fracturing operations taking place nearby at that time; manystill rely on artesian wells today because these are more environmentally sustainable methods than traditional drilling methods used today which can damage natural resources e

The area that is now Butler was first settled by German colonists in the 17th century. In 1814, Butler was given its current name by George Butler, who donated land to the town. The post office has been in operation since 1825 and the town has had a mill built on the Susquehanna River since 1861. Butler was hit hard by the Depression of 1930-1932 and experienced some difficult times during World War II. However, it bounced back and became an important center for heavy equipment manufacturing during that time. Today, Butler is known for its large number of high school students and its annual cheese festival which attracts many visitors from surrounding counties.
