Butler, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Butler County, Ohio. The population was 2,819 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. The name "Butler" comes from a French word meaning "doorpost." In 1792, Major General James Wilkinson of the United States army built Fort Cumberland on what is now State Road 6 in what is now Butler Township. In 1812, Colonel John Armstrong founded Armstrong’s Tavern on the current site of Smith & Wessontowne Shopping Center. In 1825, Major General Nathaniel Banks invaded and sacked this village during his expedition against Canandaigua Creek insurgents led by Butternut Hillyer. The destruction and devastation done to Butler were so great that it remains one of America's least devastated villages from its history as an American settlement. The first rifle stock made in Butler was made by Ephraim Burritt and sold to William Hogg for $15 in 1827. Hogg used it to shoot game at his home in nearby Delaware Township until 1830 when he moved to Grayslake (now Arlington Heights) and began manufacturing rifles there also. In 1836-37, Henry Clay produced his famous Second Kentucky Revolution Rifle at his Elmira gun factory along with many other firearms products during the Gun Centennial Celebration which took place in Philadelphia that year. This event helped promote gun control laws across America throughout much of the 1840s due to public concern over rifling technology then being developed by England which had yet to be properly implemented into military firearms worldwide including America's own muzzleloader industry! By 1850, rifle stocks were being manufactured by Captain George Stephenson who ran a large factory near present day Greenville Village where he continued making rifles until 1861 when Union forces burned down his facility along with many others associated with Confederate arms production during their campaign against Union forces known as The Overthrow or Battle of Gettysburg! This event forever changed rifle production within America as well as international trade as Confederate munitions became increasingly difficult or impossible to obtain outside of South Carolina and Georgia!
