Butler, Pennsylvania is a small town located in the Susquehanna River valley of western Pennsylvania. The population was 7,836 at the 2010 census. Butler is one of five townships in Butler County and it is part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Butler was founded by Hugh Butler in 1786 as a log cabin community on the south side of the Susquehanna River. By 1825, the community had grown to include a frame courthouse and six households. In 1827, Butler became one of seven townships in Butler County when it was organized from portions of Northumberland Township. The township's boundaries were redrawn in 1829 and 1840, shifting some land eastward to form what are now parts of Adams Township and Union Township. In 1901, Tucker Paper Company opened an paper mill in what is now downtown Butler. That same year saw the opening of Huntingdon-Wilcox High School which later became known as Butler University. The mill closed in 1978 but remains standing as a historical landmark located near Interstate 77 exit 20A off US 301/441W between Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. In 2000, construction began on a new shopping mall called "The Crossing" which would anchor Shopping Center One across from Huntingdon-Wilcox High School; this project ultimately failed to materialize despite heavy investment by local businesses including PNC Bank and Macy's Incorporated during its initial development phase). As of 2019 there are no plans for any redevelopment or expansion at The Crossing since it ceased operations due to financial difficulties following several years of poor performance by both anchors." Butler was founded in 1795 by John Butler and his brother, Anthony Butler. The community grew rapidly due to the natural resources available in the area such as coal, oil, and timber. In 1825, a post office was established in Butler with the name of " refined water." The population of Butler had reached 687 by 1870 when it merged with the neighboring town of Elkton to form the larger city of Elktonville. However, because of its remote location and lack of transportation options, Elktonville experienced a rapid decline in population over the next several decades. By 1925, only 50 residents lived in Butlertown proper while all other buildings were abandoned. The city's only remaining building is a schoolhouse which was built in 1903. It is now used as a museum for local history and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978.
Butler was founded in 1795 by John Butler, a Revolutionary War soldier and landowner. The town was named for Butler's father, John Butler who had also served in the war. The first store in the town was built on Main Street. In 1815, the town became a borough and then a city in 1903.
