Butler, Pennsylvania is a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,853 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Reading area. Butler is located on the Susquehanna River and is bordered by Montgomery County to the north and east, Berks County to the south, and Lebanon Township to the west. Butler was first settled in 1795 by John Butler who named it for his father-in-law's birthplace in Ireland. In 1827, James Fenton bought land here from John Butler and began developing it into a farming community with sawmills and other mills on the river. By 1870, all of what are now Butler Township had been developed as farms or rural villages surrounding a busy railroad station which became known as "The Hub." In 1876–77, when coalmining started up near nearby Monaca and other mines were flooded with water caused by heavy rains that season, many farmers banded together to try to save their crops; they called themselves "The Union League". They succeeded in getting state funding to help them rebuild their homes and mill buildings after heavy damage from floods. Coal mining stopped around 1900 but some new businesses cropped up including a meatpacking plant (1905), an electric power company (1912), a grocery store (1925), two banks (1945), a post office (1959), and several residences built between 1951-1960s when much of central PA was still rural. In 1961-62 when Central Pa experienced its worst outbreak of polio since World War II due to contaminated surfaces left over from earlier dirty air raids on German cities such as Hamburg etc., many people in southern Butler voted not to accept fluoridation of water supplies because they felt this would increase childhood cancer rates among children living close enoughtofluoridated water sources! The decision not fluoridate was later overturned by court order but this experience solidified support for local control over drinking water resources throughout PA.. Many residents continue to farm while others have moved into industry or services like healthcare or technology development. As business begins booming again things are looking rosy for locals! Butler is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,858 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest town in Butler County and home to the Butler University campus. The first settler in what would become Butler was Nicholas Cushman who arrived in 1784 from England. He built a cabin on the east side of what is now State Street. The first post office was established in 1785, and by 1814 there were ten townships within Butler County. In 1827, part of Butler Township became Lawrence Township; this change followed another civil division of the county following a boundary dispute between Armstrong and Lawrence townships. In 1860, most of Northumberland Township (later York) merged with Butler to form what would become Northumberland County; however, some residents continued to live in South Central Township until that township was dissolved in 1871. That same year saw the opening of Philadelphia's first railway station - South Western Depot - which served as the junction for several railways serving different parts of Pennsylvania including those leading to Lancaster and Reading. This caused business leaders throughout northwestern Pennsylvania to begin looking for land on which to build breweries and other industrial enterprises; this led to the founding of many small towns across that region during that decade-namely: Allentown (1863), Bethlehem (1865), Erie (1867), Wilkes-Barre (1869), Pittsburgh (1870), Scranton (1871). The Panic of 1893 impacted northeastern Pennsylvania particularly hard due to high levels of unemployment among farmers unable to sell their goods abroad as prices collapsed around the world; this led many businesses throughout northeast PA closed their doors or went out of business altogether. However, despite these challenges, large portions of Northeast PA escaped any major physical damage resulting fromHurricane Agnes on September 11th & 12th 1992 when federal troopsdirected all firefighting efforts statewide while remaining stationary outside cities due To Nationalists' fears that such an event would lead TO suburban riots (& ultimately mob violence)).
