The community experienced economic decline during the late 20th century but has rebound since 2000 as retail jobs have returned to Butler and other local businesses have expanded into new markets. Butler is located on State Route 827 east of Pittsburgh and north of Allentown. The town is bordered by Armstrong County to the south; Potter County to the west; Allegheny County to the northwest; and Washington Township to the north-northwest. According tothe 2010 census, Butler has a total area of 26 square miles (71 square kilometers). The climate in this area is characterized by hot summers and generally mild winters: according tothe Köppen Climate Classification system, Butler has a humid subtropical climate with abbreviated precipitation season . Butler was born on October 1, 1792, in the town of Butler, Pennsylvania. The town was named after General George Butler who fought in the American Revolution. He was a soldier and politician who served as the 23rd Mayor of Philadelphia from 1825 to 1830 and as United States Minister to Spain from 1829 to 1830. Butler attended public schools in Butler and then studied law at an office near Market Crossroads. He began his legal career in 1821, working for different attorneys before starting his own practice in 1825. In that year he was elected Mayor of Philadelphia and held the position until 1830. During his time as mayor he revitalized the city by stimulating economic development with new initiatives like a water works project and creating a system of streetlights. In addition to being mayor, Butler also served as United States Minister to Spain from 1830 to 1834. In this role he helped popularize American culture in Europe by traveling throughout the continent and promoting American products such as newspapers and books. While stationed in Spain he also developed close ties with King Ferdinand VII which later led to him becoming Ulysses S Grant’s first Secretary of War (1865-1869).
Butler was founded in 1751 by Samuel Butler and his family. The town was named for General William Butler, who fought in the French and Indian War. In 1801, the town became a part of newly organized Armstrong County. On February 3, 1829, Butler was made a city by act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. The city's boundaries were enlarged on July 1, 1836 when it annexed the northern half of Cumberland Township. On December 2, 1861, Butler became a part of the new University City School District.
