So when firearms came overland on stagecoaches during the American Revolution, some Butler County farmers obtained them illegally by lying about their ownership of weapons. The first rifle sights and fire-arms were made by Nicholas-Jacques Drouin and his brother Louis Drouin in 1795 in Quebec City, Canada. These devices consisted of a mirror surface with an upright armillary sphere (the so-called “Drouin sight”) set upon it which allowed you to see distant objects through it while holding the rifle muzzle down against a target; this sighting system was adapted for field use by Colonel John Forbes in 1811 at Fort Erie on Lake Ontario. This rifle sight is still used today on many types of rifles including shotguns
