In 1835, Daniel Boone purchased land from William Penn for $3,000 to begin developing what would become Butler County into a farming community with sawmills and other enterprises. In 1851, when Ohio statehood was granted to America, Butler became one of its initial counties along with Westmoreland and Monongalia Counties. By 1870, it had grown to 2 townships with a population of 536 residents including 116 slaves working at nearby mills which supplied goods to Philadelphia during that time period
