Additionally, during the late 1940s and early 1950s, Butler became home to one of America's first black churches-Churchill Chapel Baptist Church-and also played a key role in leading the fight for civil rights in post-war America.Today, much of Butler remains unchanged from its heyday as a small Midwestern town; however, several thousand residents live within walking distance of downtown or are served by six schools and two libraries combined.
