Bloomsburg, PA (population: 20,000) is a town in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 14,839 at the 2010 census. Bloomsburg is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1777 by English colonists and named for John Bloomfield, an officer in the British army who had fought against the French and Indian War. In 1801, James Kapp founded a logging village called Kappstown on what is now east side of Bloomsburg Township; this village burned down in 1802. A post office was established at Bloomfield in 1803, and remained open until 1865. In 1825, George Washington leased from Nicholas Flacco 4 square miles (10 km²) of present-day Bloomsburg Township to build a home for himself and his family on Mount Lebanon Road near present-day Monroeville. The president's house remain as one of the few remaining examples of Federal architecture from this era in Pennsylvania. From here he took dictation for much of his writing while living in Philadelphia during the Revolutionary War and during the early years of his Presidency; these letters are now stored at Mount Lebanon Road's original site. In 1829–30 when anthracite coal began to be developed commercially around Blairtown (now Findlay), local residents petitioned General Andrew Jackson to lease them some land so that they could mine coal there as well as sell their product back to those residing within easy reach – which he did after consulting with friends such as Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. This act helped spur settlement around Blairtown by people looking for new opportunities due to increased production costs associated with Anthracite Coal Fields outside Philadelphia proper (at that time it cost about $4/tonne instead of $2/tonne). When construction began on the Erie Canal west of Blairtown in 1830-31 using convict labor recruited from Rhode Island & Massachusetts Bay Colony prisons – many citizens saw this project as another way to improve their economic status since it would provide them access to goods previously unavailable to them due primarily to high transportation costs eastward across Lake Erie & into newly formed Ohio & Indiana Territory via canals built by others – many also saw this project as contributing towards America's overall independence movement during that period. An ordinance was passed by township voters on November 8th, 1830 authorizing trustees appointed by Jackson "to purchase all or any parts" of Canaal Lands necessary "for carrying on said canal." By December 1st 1830 almost all vestiges of Kappstown had been cleared away including everything north thereof including most buildings still standing today within boundaries set forth therein ; today only original foundations remains visible along Mt Lebanon Rd which runs through town center - note no other physical evidence indicates where once stood “Kappstown” townsite actually located! Bloomsburg is a borough in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, located in Centre County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,062. Bloomsburg is one of two even-sized townships in Centre County and is bordered by Lebanon to the south and west, Butler to the east, and York to the north. The borough was formed from portions of four previous villages: Bloomfield (1793), Duncansville (1801), Herndon (1812), and Lawnsdale (1824). The first post office in Bloomsburg was established in 1824. The History of Bloomsburg begins with three small villages that were incorporated into a single municipality on January 1st 1825: Bloomfield, Duncansville, and Herndon Village. On July 1st 1827 Township Officers met at Bloomfields home to create a new township which would include all four villages plus parts of Lancaster and Berks counties. The first courthouse was erected on Market Street within minutes of this meeting. In 1848 an act passed by the General Assembly provided for a school district that would include all five original villages as well as Bethlehem Township’slying areas to the south and west; however no town Meeting took place until March 3rd 1850 because so many residents desired representation on School Board! On February 14th 1860 two brothers named John Crouse bought 2/3 interest in Brush Creek Valley Railroad Company for $1,000 cash – this began what would become known as “The Crouse Brothers Railroad Empire”! During The American Civil War most residents sided with Confederate States Of America whileBloomstownandHerndonVilleemobilized againstthe Union Government under the name “Union League”! After The War most businesses closed down or moved away as war-time competition became overwhelming; however some such as Brush Creek Valley Railroad continued running until 1918 when it merged with Penn Central Railway Company! In 1865 Anthon Peele became President pro tem for Northampton County; he later served terms as Mayor of Philadelphia & Vice President Of United States! In 1895 Anthony Jahn purchased land adjacent to Borough Hall for use as a parkland today known as Anthony Jahn Park!. In 1907 funding came available from philanthropist Isaac Salka allowing construction started on what is now Borough Hall Annex including its current building!! On October 6th 1912 Borough Council elected Mr Frank Agerliff Mayor following his successful campaign against incumbent Mrs Anna Spaulding!!! Mr Agerliff lasted only six months before being impeached during an election year scandal!!! Mrs Spaulding then became acting mayor until November 15th when she won another term without opposition!! While Bloomsburg enjoyed relative peace during these years there were also periods where crime rates soared due to industrial espionage or political turmoil throughout much of Europe during World War I !! However following World War I things began to normalize with limited violence taking place until 1939 when Japanese bombers bombed Pearl Harbor !! This event led to increased crime rates which continue today albeit at lower levels !! In 1951 Borough Council made history by appointing Judge Julius Wohlstadt Commissioner Of Public Welfare!! This position eventually evolved into today’s Municipal Court role which continues present day !
