The first enlargement of the Bloomsburg History Museum was in 1978 when it opened its doors to the public. The museum has grown ever since and now occupies a 3-story building on the southeast corner of Market and Third Streets. The museum is open from 10am to 4pm Monday through Friday, 10am to 2pm Saturday, and 12pm to 4pm Sunday. Admission is free for anyone age 16 or older.
Bloomsburg is a borough in Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Bloomsburg were the Lenape Indians. They named it "Nanticoke" because they thought it resembled an image of a white man's nose that they had seen on a map. In 1745, David Livingston and his party arrived on horseback from New York and founded the town of Monaca (now Allentown). George Washington surveyed these lands as part of his survey of Western Pennsylvania in 1786-87. He named this location "Bloomsburg," after James Bloomfield, an influential Delaware settler who had donated land for the town site. In 1824, John Duryea built himself a log cabin here on Indian Creek near what is now UPMC Boulevard and Market Street. This became one of the most important logging towns in central Pennsylvania because it provided logs for many mills around the region. The town continued to grow until World War II when its population plummeted due to munitions production and other wartime factors. Today, Bloomsburg remains a small community with strong ties to its rural surroundings through agriculture and natural resources industries such as lumbering and fishing. Today, Bloomsburg’s rich cultural heritage can be seen in its many popular festivals – such asthe annual pumpkin festival or summer cornfest – as well as throughout its downtown district which features dozens of shops, restaurants, bars and galleries including two music venues – Blossom Music Center located at 6th & Main Streets and Carnegie Hall located at 200 N Third Street – both belonging to Pittsburgh’s three main chamber Orchestras: Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO), Philharmonic Orchestra (PO) and Allegheny County Symphony Orchestra (ACSO).
