Bloomsburg is a town in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,869 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Schuylkill County and one of the three towns in the tri-cities of Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first European settlers arrived in 1799 and founded a community on the present site of Bloomsburg. On October 8, 1800, General John Forbes delivered a speech from the steps of local courthouse about plans for developing what would become Bloomsburg as an agricultural center with markets throughout central Pennsylvania. At first, only men could hold land titles because there were no deeds available to women. In 1802, both male and female residents voted to allow women to own property. In 1814-1816, Captain Samuel Morse built his family's mill onrites Creek east of present day Bloomsburg at what is now known as Morse Road (now US 1). His mill became one of the earliest mills located within close proximity of modern day Philadelphia. In 1825, Captain George Washington Patten organized a wagon train from New York City carrying goods needed for construction on Market Street in Philadelphia during the erection of Independence Hall. He donated 20 acres (8 ha) next to his mill lot for use as a public square which served as an important transportation hub for goods moving between Philadelphia and Broadway in Center City until it burned down in 1865. On November 3rd 1830, James Scott founded Scott Paper Company with capitalization totaling $10 thousand which became one of the largest paper companies west of Great Lakes region by 1861 when it merged with another paper company to create American Paper Company (later Thomson-Houston Corporation). The first sales office was opened at 233 South Second Street near where Piedmont Avenue now stands; this facility remained open until 1906 when production moved to nearby Whitehall Factory due to increasing competition from Great Britain’s Henley Paper Company Limited (later British Petroleum Corporation). For many years Bloomsburg was home to America’s leading paper manufacturer with its annual production exceeding twenty million pounds sterling before World War II led American Paper Co.) into bankruptcy due largely to wartimeDemand restrictions imposed by government authorities following Pearl Harbor attack on December 7th 1941 . In 1830 over 200 people were living in nearby Johnstown when it became clear that some sort of courthouse or government building would be necessary for the nascent community; construction began soon thereafter on what would become Penn State's first building - an old log school house which served both purposes until 1861 when a more permanent structure was erected.. With two exceptions - one in 1847 due to financial difficulties caused by war intervenes () and one following incorporation as an independent city limits borough () - all subsequent mayors or Borough Presidents have come from within Penn State itself (). This unique situation has contributed markedly toBloomingdale's position as one of America's most highly ranked educational cities – second only to New York City – with colleges/universities located throughout its borders..
