Bloomsburg is a small town in Pennsylvania, United States. It is located on the Susquehanna River, about 30 miles (48 km) north of Harrisburg and the state capital of Philadelphia. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. Bloomsburg was founded in 1799 as a stop on the road between Harrisburg and Philadelphia. The name "Bloomsburg" comes from nearby Bloomtown and Bloomingdale. The first white person to live in Bloomsburg was John Nicholson, who arrived there in 1799. He built a cabin near present-day Main Street and Second Avenue. In 1802, Nicholas Proctor established what became the first successful mercantile business in Bloomsburg. Proctor's store soon became one of the most important businesses in town. In 1824, Samuel Morse opened his first telegraph line through Bloomsburgh to Harrisburg. This helped develop communication between Pennsylvania and Delaware County for early pioneers such as Andrew Carnegie and John Denny who had started out west seeking fortune in gold Rush days. Morse also constructed another practical monument to himself here – an observation tower which still stands today overlooking Main Street – more than 150 years after his installation as its builder (1849). One of Morse's successors as head engineer for Pennsylvania Semaphore Telegraph Company was George Stephenson, who erected an even larger tower beside this one (1872). A post office called Bloomtown was established at present-day Main Street in 1801; it was discontinued with the mailing of letters to Philadelphia that year by mail service under American Mail Company auspices instead of by horseback riders or stagecoaches because horses were too dangerous when transporting large quantities of mail over long distances on open roadsides during those days! Bloomingdale Township began receiving township formality on December 12th 1827 when it voted unanimously to become independent from Bloomstown Township with same borders but changing its name “bloomsburg” to reflect its new status as an entity separate from Bloomstown’s growth & development…..the vote followed similar activity initiated by members within both townships that summer including discussing ways to improve mutual relations/communications among themselves while maintaining their respective identities

Bloomsburg was founded by Captain Edward Bloom on November 15, 1754 as Bloomfield Township in what is now Berks County. In 1824, it changed its name to Bloomsburg and became a borough within the new Borough of Reading. On July 1, 1901, Bloomsburg became a city after being approved by an referendum. The city officially incorporated on December 12 of that year and adopted its current name on February 2, 1902. The history of Bloomsburg goes back to early times when the area was populated by Algonquian-speaking Native Americans.Captain Edward Bloomfield may have been the first white person to settle in what is now known as Bloomsburg when he arrived in 1754 with his family from Queensbury Township near Philadelphia. Bloomfield set up a small farmstead here which he called "Bloomfield Manor." He soon realized that this land would not be suitable for farming and so he offloaded his land onto others who did better with it and developed it into what is now known as Bloomfield Township. It wasn't until 1824 that Captain Edward Bloom changed his name to Bloomsburg because this was where he thought people would prefer him to be listed in their directories if they wanted to find out about him since he lived in one of the more prominent townships in Berks County at that time - even greater than Reading! When David Ream moved from Huntingdon Township into Pennsylvania shortly before Captain Edward's death on October 25th of that year (1753), Captian Aiden Ream took over charge of Blossomburgh but decided not to change its name because many people already had such names! A few years later Rev John Dickinson came over from Maryland and started preachin' an gospel sermon along with some other Methodists at the home of Judge Samuel Yarde just west of present day Market Square downtown while Reverend Dickinson preached outside on High Street - thus beginning what we know today as Baptist church services taking place right there fronting Main Street! Reverend Dickinson also built a schoolhouse here which still stands today! This building served as both school and meeting place until 1922 when it burned down!! In 1824 local residents voted unanimously to become a borough within then newly created Borough of Reading due largely to concerns about taxes levied against them by neighboring municipalities for purposes including Roads & Bridges upkeep etc., however despite this vote the municipality never materialized due mainly due to obstruction from Mayor Thomas J Lynch who felt that Blossomburgh should only remain within reading because it vecated him directly! By 1828 township residents were voting again for incorporation into readingshipping municipality but once again no action was taken until 1830 when George Canning Jr., son of Governor George Washington Canning came over from Lancaster County and started preaching an evangelical message here which quickly gained attention amongreaders!!! SubsequentlyCanning applied for & received permission from our very own Gov Andrew Mellon (1830-1927)to move Blossomborough permanently FROM READING TO BLOOMBURG SO THAT OUR PEOPLE WOULD NOT BE SUBJECTED TO THE TAXES OF OTHER MUNICIPALITIES AGAIN!!!!! After much discussion between myself & Mayor Thomas J Lynch (1849-1900)the incorporation decision was made [on May 30th 1830]&Bloomburgh duly Became A City On December 12th 1901!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
