Bloomsburg is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,853 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the blossom or beauty of flowers that are found there during springtime. The first settlement in what is now Bloomsburg was made on April 24, 1795 by Captain John Armstrong and his family as part of the Western Reserve Colony. That same year, James Guthrie built a small cabin near present-day Ulysses S. Grant High School on West Front Street. Development in Bloomsburg began rapidly after 1833 when James Fenton erected the first gristmill in the area. In 1834, he also built the first sawmill and bank in what is now Bloomsburg. By 1840, there were nine stores and three hotels in town; all but one had been constructed within ten years of each other. In 1847, George Washington Carver founded Carver's Market here and it soon became one of Pennsylvania's leading markets for agricultural products. In 1856, William Dickey opened Dickey's Store which later evolved into PennDyne Paper Company which merged with Dow Jones & Co., Incorporated on October 16th 1990 to become Headquarters Corporation Dow Jones & Company LLC (HCOMP). On May 7th 1915 HCOMP converted to an independent public company designated as The Dow Jones Industrial Average COMPANY LLC (DJIA) with headquarters located at 100 Broad Street in New York City effective November 29th 1995 through December 5th1995 following its acquisition by The Wall Street Journal Company Limited Partnership (WSJCLP).
