Bloomsburg is a town in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 24,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Bloomsburg were three Frenchmen, Pierre de Montsou and François Bouchard and their guide Nicolas-Jacques Marquette, who traveled from Quebec on July 4, 1764. The fort served as a center for fur trade with Native Americans and became known as "the bastion of American civilization." In 1777, during the American Revolutionary War, General John Forbes led an expedition against British forces at Fort Pitt; he was killed in action. In 1802–1803 James Fenton built a gristmill on Brush Creek near present-day Bloomsburg with water power from the creek. In 1827 John Hargrave donated land to form what would become Bloomsburg Township; it was named after him. The first store opened in Bloomsburg in 1829 by entrepreneur Ephraim McGowan. In 1850–1851 Augustus Wistar founded Wistar University in nearby Hatfield City and made it one of the first coeducational universities in America. Wistar also developed what is now downtown Bloomsburg into one of its most important commercial areas with several stores, restaurants and other businesses contributing to its growth until World War II when it lost much of its commercial importance due to technological advances. After World War II there was significant residential development which has transformed downtown into one of the most popular residential areas in all of Bucks County while still preserving much cultural heritage associated with early settlement including mills and churches dating back to colonial times
