Bloomsburg is a town in and the county seat of Monroe County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 21,949 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first European settlement in what is now Bloomsburg was made by John Derry in 1784 as an independent township. The name "Bloomsbury" was given to it by Colonel Edward Blount who surveyed and bought land there in 1788. A post office was established at Bloomingdale on July 1, 1800, and continued operation until February 14, 1811; it had been closed due to Increase Mifflin's War against Native Americans. In 1812, Bloomingdale became part of the new Carbon Township form organized byPennsylvania General Assembly under Act of November 2nd following the end of the Northwest IndianWar. On January 25th, 1815 – one day after its incorporation into Carbon Township – Bloomingdale elected its first government: a board of nine men chaired by governor Nicholas Sacco with four members recruited from among residents themselves In 1825 Bloomingdale voters passed an ordinance setting up a school district that would serve all of Monroe County as well as portions of Allegheny and Westmoreland Countieshire within present-day Pittsburgh proper; this action helped create what is now known as “the School District Movement” which helped spur development in western PA during the 1830s and 1840s On December 5th, 1839 Bloomingdale became one of two townships to be formed from parts of Uniontown following enactment by Pennsylvania General Assembly under Act No. 8 (charter number 3) - thus becoming one third within present-day Monroe County In 1861 both Bloomfield Township (to the south) & Uniontown Borough (to the north) were consolidated into Bloomsburg Borough pursuant to acts passed by Pennsylvania General Assembly at same time As part of larger changes taking place throughout Western PA during late 19th century particularly spurred by railroad construction & industrialization Bloomsburg lost some key commercial buildings including Merchants Exchange Building between First Street and Third Avenue east side & Second Street west side along tracks going thru town center but new brick building erected near North Bridge over Little Susquehanna River built for New York Central Railroad company expanding their line through town center replacing old sawmill buildings on site During World War II much heavy industry took place in borough resulting in many destroyed homes (& other nearly intact structures) belonging to defense contractors located nearby including Du Pont Chemical Company plant on Monroeville Road just outside town limits
