The first schools were built here in 1743-44 by German settlers under instruction from Reverend Meinrad Kieft, parish priest of Messiah Parish on Susquehanna River upstream frompresent day Bloomfield Township. A schoolhouse was erected near Mill Creek about this time and served as both a public and religious school until 1824 when it burned down due to an early eighteenth century fire that destroyed many homes and barns in what is now Bloomfield Township (now part of Clinton Township). One year later Rev John Sutter arrived from Massachusetts to open a new Conestoga Academy which became known as “Sutter’s Academy” for many years before being renamed “Bloomfield Academy” in 1886 when Mrs Anna Ladd took over management following her husband’s death. The first settler in what is now Bloomsburg was John Armstrong who arrived in 1753. He founded Armstrong's Mills on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The town was originally named "Fulton" after Sir William Fulton, an Englishman who built a mill on that stream in 1795. In 1801, John Dickson erected a mansion in what is now downtown Bloomsburg and called it "Dickson Manor". He became very rich from his business interests there and donated most of his wealth to charity. The townspeople renamed it "Bloomsburg" after him in 1811. The first store opened here on Main Street in 1814 by Alexander Grote and Nathan Phillips (the founder of Philadelphia). At that time, this was one of the most important commercial areas in central Pennsylvania because it served as a transportation hub for goods heading south to Reading and Altoona and north to Harrisburg/Carlisle. Many famous pioneers such as Andrew Johnson, James Buchanan and Ulysses S Grant were born or raised here including Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), Franklin D Roosevelt (1912-1945) and Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921).
